Having a problem with my coolant temp/level light.

When the car is cold and the outside temp is below 0.5 deg.

The coolant light comes on and then stays on until the car has been switched off.

The coolant levels are fine and the coolant a pinkie colour.

Any help would be great.

Not really any help, but mine does something similar. I'm not sure what temp. it has to be for it to do it, but whe it's real cold out, just after starting the coolant light will chime three times and then stay on. If I restart the car after a couple of mins it goes away.

I told Skoda about this and they said not to worry it's just the sensor playing up in extreme cold. My coolant doesn't seem to be low and is a pinkish colour like you've said. Maybe there's a sensor on it's way out?

Mine was doing the same after the first start of the day. After asking on here about it, a faulty sensor in the expansion tank was reckoned to be the problem. The sensor is an integral part of the tank so the whole thing needs replaced.

Dealer fixed it under warranty, would have cost £44 to repair outside warranty.

Has been fine since.

mine was doing this too. The sensor was faulty in the expansion bottle. Due to the fact the sensor was moulded into the bottle, I just bought a new bottle for £10 from my local Skoda dealer & i have never had the coolant light on since.:thumbup:

this is exactly the problem. The "sensor" is in fact just two wire prongs moulded into the expansion tank which get covered by coolant when it's at the right level.

Presumably the fault detection system uses electrical resistivity or permeability of the coolant to determine that the prongs are covered sufficiently.

I suspect that maybe the prongs get coated over time which alters the way the level measurement works and causes this problem in cold temperatures.

I tried slightly overfilling mine above the Max mark, and the problem hasn't reoccurred since, maybe it hasn't been as cold, maybe it's enough to fix it, I don't know, but it's cheap to try :thumbup:

So, is this new expansion tank £10 or £44? Or is £44 the fitted price?

This has been covered so many times, happened to mine. Just take the top off the expansion bottle, get a small screwdriver and rub it gently up and down the 2 prongs. This fixed mine and many other peoples on here. Dont buy a new tank/sensor untill u've tried this. Very small bubles form on these prongs effecting readings when v.cold.

Excrement! I'll give this a try and hopefully avoid another trip to Garlands...
