SatNavs and MFD

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I picked up my RS yesterday, and wow what a fantastic drive it is!

I'm gonna get a remap, and rear ARB in the near future.

First on my list of things though is a satnav.

I've always been a firm believer in modifying things to a factory standard.

With this in mind I would like to fit a MFD to it.

I've been browsing over the VWnavi forums at the MFD section, and I would like to go this route, but I'm wondering if anyone would be able to post some photos of the user interface of using one.

I realise that it wont be quite so easy as a TomTom or Garmin, but without having touch screen i'm just concerned about its ease of use.

Am I right in thinking that the map cd/dvd goes into the slot above the sat nav?

I'm taking a holiday to France soon, this is the main reason for a SatNav, will it just be a case of buying a European cd/dvd and popping that in the player?

I'm also interested in the Maxidot display? Is this possible to fit into a mk1?

The other alternativ is to buy an after market double din sat nav, can anyone recommend one?

Thanks for all your help

Matt

I'll see if I can get some (might have problems in the dark) back in a min

Yes the Map CD ROM goes in the slot above the screen, you can stick a euro disc in to go onto the continent (thats what I did in the summer).

It's not the most modern system, but it works quite well, has better sound quality than the Symphony and is very handy.

Forgot to say, you scroll along the alphabet/menus using the right hand ****, then press it in to select a letter or option.

Mattmoore,

Here are some more pics .

You can get Europe, Western Europe Maps as VRSphil stated.

Not as nice a Tom Tom but useable. I have used it many times with no fault. Actually had Tom Tom running at the same time and they both went the same directions. It certainly makes Centre Dash better looking as well.

Thanks for the photos guys, thats a great help!

I think it makes the console alot better, especially without that big hole there!

one of the major concerns with fitting an after market one is it being pinched.

If its completely in keeping with the rest of the interior, I cant see anyone wanting to pinch it.

Do the map CD's have to be specific for for VAG MFD?

can you buy one of these direct from skoda?

how much are they?

im interested now since i was looking to replace my head unit anyway. and get an alpine cd changer with a vag adapter as my changer is playing up.

You can buy them from Skoda but they were still over £1k last time I checked. Ebay is your best bet - Around £200-£350ish on there. The Skoda unit is quite rare, though :(
