1.9 TDi 'hunting'?

Featured Replies

Hi All

My Octavia has this intermittent problem. When first started sometimes the engine revs at idle keep dropping to about 800 rpm, then the engine revs itself back up to normal idle speed, revs drop again, rev up again, etc etc.

This hiccuping happens for around 5 minutes then it sorts itself out.

It's been doing it for a while, but happens very rarely and with no particular common factors other than generally occurs first thing in the morning.

I've heard this type of behavior referred to as 'hunting' in old diesels?

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Cheers,

James.

It sounds like it may be a glowplug issue, or an air leak into the fuel system (but I can't see why an air leak would sort itself out after running a few minutes, unless it's only happening with the engine off).

Mine's a bit the same, often starting on 2 or 3 cylinders, then the other(s) joining in after 2 or 3s, and I'm pretty sure that's just glowplugs.

Certainly sounds like a Glow plug issue.
