Car Hire

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm being taken away to London for my 25th birthday in March and I'm looking to hiring a car but I have one problem I can't find the paper part of my driving license, will I need this to hire the car or will the photocard part suffice.

Cheers

Davy

I think both parts are always needed (as the paper part shows any endorsements you may carry).....

I think you could be right thinking about it now, looks like I'm going to have to tip the house upside down to find it.

Yes, you'll need the counterpart (get searching :) )...

Rob.

You'll need 2 pieces of ID probably, and both parts of your licence.

Who are you hiring the car from?

I've not decided yet, still in the planning process it would be a car hire place in slough just so that we can get to the likes of windsor and reading without the public transport.

You might be able to get away with a photo card, passport and 2 proofs of address to be honest.

I can recommend National. Bolton Branch have been good to me

I'll keep that in mind.

once whilst moving house and needing a van, a friend couldn't find his licence (paper one - this is before you had to have a photocard) and all he needed was his licence number and they could check any endorsements some other way. this is back in about 2002.

So not only did they rent a van to an under- 25 yr old but didn't even see his licence.

 strange but true.

I would just phone up a couple, ask them and see what they say

Thats all the licence for to see if you have any points/pending thingies.

Spoke to my Dad and he said you will need both parts.

Also you'll be asked if you want the damage waiver for an extra x amount each day.

I've never taken it out as the excess is a constant reminder to take care of the car when driving it. (Was £500 when I was under 25)

Enterprise were OK when I got the car but when handing it back it wasn't as trouble free as I hoped. plus the cars exhaust was a little loud.

Bearing in mind I was truthful to them and I didnt find any dings, scratches etc when I checked the car fully before handing it back.

For me anyways I'll be sticking to National. But your branch experiences may differ to mine.

*check car when you pick it up and always report anything you find before taking the car out.

Usually its take car on a full tank and return on full

Check car when handing it back

If you don't have your license some will phone the DVLA with you there to check your licence validity and endorsements for a small fee (£3) IIRC

Enterprise would anyway

Used Enterprise a couple of times now and can't fault the Andover office. Cheap too. Wrt the damage waiver, I tend to weigh up how many miles (and where!) I'm going to be driving it as to whether it's worth it. I ended up taking it out on the van I hired as it was a couple of quid extra but not on the Golf which it was substantially more.
