Whining Noise - Possibly Air Con

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My 2001 Octy has developed a rather annoying whinning noise. ITs definitley not the turbo as it quite happyily whistles away as normal in the back round. This is a louder deeper sound and started of quite low, barely audible and developed into louder noise about 2x-3x that the noise of the turbo.

My air con dies at about 70k and i have been running it for about 25k without it. Is it likely to be a collapsed bearing in the pulley that runs the air con thats causing the noise, my local service guy checked the alternator and said that is was fine but didnt have time to check the rest of the stuff that runs on the pulley.

If it is the air con pully is it possible to by-pass with a short belt i.e. a belt from a car with no air-con?

Cheers.

If the aircon died, it was probably the clutch, and the pulley has just been whizzing round on the spindle ever since.

Also, is it engine speed related, and not road speed related?

If it's engine speed, it's pretty much got to be one of the air con pulley, the alternator, the PAS pump or an idler pulley, but I'd advise finding out which before going any further.

If it's road speed, it's probably an inner CV joint.

Finally, it's possible in principle to do what you asked, and there's another thread on the subject, somewhere in the last few days.

Thanks, yes it is related to engine speed, not road speed, the alternator has been checked and it's fine. Will drop it off to the local Skoda garage and get them to check it out and "quote" for the shortened belt. Cheers.
