Performance filter on octy II

Featured Replies

I managed to fit the green filter today into the car, it was a tighter fit than the last and im still not happy with the fit on the air intake end against the seals, is this normal?

Also i thought the fuel economy would be better, but its dropped drastically. Althrough the car feels slightly more responsive (probably my mind is thinking this as its now fitted) I was wondering if the performance got any better (yes i know it be 10hp more max) and would fuel economy improve as its dropped by 20% which doesnt seem right?

Is this a replacement panel filter or and induction kit?

20% worse fuel consumption seems WRONG! It should be no worse and if anything slightly better.

its a panel filter. im gonna try it on my normal route to work tomorrow as i know the min and max i can get on that route and see against it.

just wondering if ecu is reprogramming itself to it and maybe that has something to do with it?

Replacement panel filter is unlikely to affect mpg to any significant/noticeable degree.

I concurr...

Just sounds too much right foot to me :)

Have your tried disconnecting the battery for half an hour to reset the ECU?

i havent tried the battery as i dont want to sit there for hours doing clocks and everything. im guessing it was my right foot as on a drive back tonight once warmed up i was achieving 45mpg and on the journey to work this morning i was around 30mpg which is about right in the cold morning on a 9 mile drive. Will see how it goes over the weekend. Will the ecu adjust itself the more i drive it?

Yes it will, resetting it (via the battery) will mean it adjusts straight away (i.e. within 15-20 miles), all you have to do is reset the clock (15 second job max) all other settings (e.g. radio stations) will remain

Something does'nt quite sound right, are you sure you've fitted this right? Resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery is a bit extreme, you can achieve the same effect by inducing a fault (disconnecting the MAF is the easiest way) and using VAGCOM to clear the fault codes

That sounds far more complex, especially if you don't have access to VAG COM...

On that point, when I fitted my filter I obviosly had to disconnect the MAF, does this mean I will have fault code registered?

nah it doesnt, vag com will be plugged in tomorrow and sorted that way. cheers steve.

steve what/where is MAF and how do i reset it? i did a vag com scan and couldnt find any faults there aparet from an alarm fault when the windows all decided to go down the other night.

cheers, does the ecu reset or reprogram itself? i took it for a drive yesterday and found at 100 it didnt want to go any faster (like it was restricted to that speed), it didnt like slow moving 1st gear traffic (30 miles later) but 20 miles after this is slow traffic its seemed better and the mpg seems to be settling out a bit now.

If i can reset the ecu with the vag com which options do i need to go into.?

It's not a case of 'reseting trhe ECU' but doing basic settings.

See Ross-Tech Wiki for more info. The important ones are Throttle Body Allignment and Intake Manifold Runner.

ive tried all that steve, hopefully its sorted, but im now concerned about this filter as ive done a block 120 run with vag com on the same stretch i did the last run a few weeks ago and have got an appalling 137bhp when before x mas when i did it with the standard filter i got nearly 143bhp. shall i just leave it for a week and give it another go then and see? if its gonna decrease my power etc i might as well go back to standard filter.
