Flywheel issue...Any update.

Featured Replies

Hi Chaps,

I have ordered a new Octy 1.9tdi. My first venture away from VW for many years. I was impressed with the JD Power surveys and the rave reviews in 'What car' from current owners etc.

However, I am increasingly concerned about the flywheel issue. The only friend I know with a two year old Octy is now suffering a juddery clutch in the mornings and the second hand Octy at the dealers that they let me test drive had the most awful clutch judder. The dealer put this down to the last owner riding the clutch!!! Who is kidding who.

How can Skoda continue to pay out for the vast amount of warranty work at the dealers to sort all these transmission problems out.

All my Bora's have probably had the same running gear over the past seven years yet I have never had a problem with any of them despite the mileage including towing dinghys.

I appreciate that many on this site came here originally because they were looking for advice and many more happy owners never look at the site or rave about the many years of trouble free mileage.

Just what percentage of these tdi's are causing problems and has the company taken any steps to seriously resolve the issue. I thought- probably wrongly that Skoda had the flywheel manufacturer alter it's torque settings.

I am seriously thinking of kicking the deposit into touch and sticking with this reliable old Bora.

Surely Skoda monitor this web site, or don't they really care?

Any observations chaps.

Yes they do and no they don't

I'm sure someone with more info than me will be along to shed more light on the matter.

Well I've had the flywheel replaced many times under warranty.

When i saw the new and old parts side by side they looked the same, so IMHO I don't think much has changed.

If a car is relaible, why change for something you have concerns about?

I thought the flywheel issue only affected the 2.0TDi - is that not correct?

Hi Eccleshill,

No the 1.9's are also prone to failure.....

They were not subject to the recall....

Thanks for the replies.

My current Bora is coming up to the end of it's three year warranty and I'm knocking on with the mileage. Yes I could keep it and buy more warranty- and tyres and MOT and cam belt....... but we normally change at about this time.

We have looked at a Jetta but VW just didn't seem interested in doing the deal this time. Take it or leave it was the attitude of two dealers we visited. No attempt at sweetening the deal. Just let us walk away. The Skoda dealer was a refreshing change and that is the reason we are in this position.

My dads 1.9 TDi has had it's flywheel replaced. Probably twice now, as it's had an engine change ordered by a skoda warranty rep to cure a buzzing rattle. He believed the engine to be causing the problem.
