4x4 gear ratios?

Featured Replies

Does anyone else find that 1st and 2nd gear on the 4x4 to be verrry short? I am beginning to wonder why they bothered putting 2nd in there at all. No good for the F1 starts at the lights.

Mind you once into 3rd things pick up nicely. I'm assuming that the short 1&2 are for all that off-roading we all do.....

Works for me...:D

Hi Wobs

Yes !! it's the same for us, we tend to use the gears as I used to on a old 197cc Greaves scramble bike. I could line up at the lights with a mate on his 650cc Bonneville on the way to work, and when the lights changed, I would go from 1st to 2nd and into 3rd before passing the opposite lights. The Bonneville of course did it in 1st, but could never beat me across those lights, but of course he was still in 1st roaring away 100 metre's further ahead. However with the TDI 4x4 unlike the Greaves once in 3rd as you mentioned is well away with no problems, if a quick start from a road filter etc was required, and 3 more gears yet to use. Enjoy it !!!

Same for me, although that 1st gear is very good for pulling the caravan off gradient starts. Cant wait for the summer to start clogging up the carriageway!!

If its a real problem the VRS cluster can be fitted straight into the 4x4 box & will raise all the ratios. My problem with the 4x4 ratios was top being too short. Even with the rev limiter raised to 7800 it was maxing out at a wisker over 160 mph. I fitted the VRS ratios but eventually stripped 3rd so Im now running a TT 6 speed box, a lot ofwork to fit but hopefully bulletproof.
