fuel level sensor

Featured Replies

I think I have a problem with the fuel level sensor...

It goes to 0, when I take the key out, and it rises to about 1/2 when I give contact.

But, I drove about 20miles with it, and it hadn't mooved a bit...

Any ideas WHAT to do?!?

How to do a thorough check? Would filling the gas tank to the top help?

Thank You,

If an "operation" is needed, please post pics if possible...

In 20 miles I wouldn't expect the gauge to do too much. Fill right to the top and see if the gauge goes to the top. Or 15 litres should give a very noticeable difference on the gauge if you don't want to brim it.

Remember if there is a fault, the problem could also equally be the fuel gauge in the instrument panel, and the gauge in the instrument panel is probably easier to get to than the sensor inside the tank.

Are you talking about the needle rising up the fuel guage when you take the key out? Mine does this and only does it when it feels like it, works fine otherwise, and I have never bothered to investigate. Mine too doesn't move much over 20 miles.

It rises, but it remains in the same position...

Any ideas of HOW TO clean the sensor in the fuel tank?

Thanx,

The tank sender unit is usually a float moving a contact over a variable resistance track. If you're determined to try and clean it (or change it for that matter), I'd suggest driving until the tank is almost empty, removing the sender unit (I'm hazy on this, cos I've never owned a Felicia), and using Servisol on the track if it's visible (which it was on the only car I've ever had one out of).

in the sender there are 3 wires, brown(earth) blue and orange, if the brown(earth) is not properly conected your gauge will always be in the 1/2 mark, so remove the earth and put it back one, check that there is good ground.....

you dont need to clean out the fuel sender, is self cleaning (only a wire coiled over a plastic strip) if you try to clean it you will most likely but the wires out of phase. but if you have the need, clean by using a little of carb cleaner and gas and wiping from up to down gently
