1.3 mpi exhaust mod, worth it?

Featured Replies

I've thought of doing a 2" stainless exhaust all the way with a free flowing cat and two free flowing silencers. Now I've done exhausts before, and then the power upgrade was noticeable - tho the car was a 3.0l turbo and the pipe 3"...

Will there be any use doing this or is it no good exept for the noise?

If it was me id hollow out the CAT, and then take the centre box out...

Did that on my Favorit...made a hellish difference!

It'll not do much without a remap; with a remap, maybe 10% from the map, plus 3 or 4 from the zorst.

interesting concept, and I like your thinking..

however, bear in mind that the exhaust creates backpressure that helps the valves work properly, esp at low revs.

removal of backpressure could lead to loss of low end torque.:thumbdwn:

much more important in the first instance would be to get the valve clearances spot on- feels like adding 10bhp.;)

as ken says, further work would be required to see better gains:thumbup:

Thanks for the info. I won't bother doing it then - after all the 1.3mpi isn't exactly a racing engine to start with.. I'll get back on this topic as soon as I go completely nuts and start working on a charged 1.3mpi :D

Might be worth looking at a Polo G40, for ideas if nothing else?

Bit pointless on a 1.3 I think, it's never going to pull the skin off a rice pudding so why waste money on it!

I also hate big exhausts on small engined cars, they sound ridiculous, like a mouse farting in the channel tunnel!

You know that there is no substance whatsoever despite the whiney annoying noise when you hear one coming up the road!

A good try:

In this case, I was trying to be helpful, rather than just make a comment about it being as useful to stick a catering size baked bean tin over the enf of the tailpipe! ;)

tryed, makes the car underivable over 1500rpm the back box cant handle it. i ended up having a jag center box put in to shut it up.

was not a good noise, was a very very bad one.

but now i have a stainless system that was custom made. its out of standard gauge tubing (so no 2" or 3") with one 18" resonator box at the back.

abit more power, and much more free reving. plus the sound is sooooooooo nice.

on a 1.3mpi?

no 1.6.

on a 1.3 i would use the same set-up but maybe with a slightly smaller box.

on a slight side note...

could you not just fit a 100bhp 1.6 from late polo/cordoba/old shape toledo to your pinkskud to give you 25bhp free?

Common wisdom seems to be that engine swap means engine mounts troubles (even if trying to swap the 1.3 for a 1.6 AEE). But of course, if you're handy with the welding gear anything can be done.

Engine swap would be great, but it's hard to pass MOT here in finland afterwards..

I've just been bored after I sold the supra and bought a far more reliable and low maintenance car. I just have this urge to weld stuff and make handmade parts to cars. :P But Since I'm a student nowadays, owning another car as a hobby is out of the budget... Maybe I'll just do the exhaust for fun.

do it do it
