Removing bumper inserts? (Mk1 Octy)

Featured Replies

Hi - I'm thinking about colour coding the bumper inserts and side strips on my Octy vRS.

Now I've read that the side strips are glued on and can be removed with a heat gun and some persuasion ;) - but I'm not sure how the front and rear bumper inserts come off? Is it a bumper off job? Or are they clipped on?

Also I have rear parking sensors - do these just pop out of the rear insert?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes they are just clipped in place.

The rear sensors will pop out too, just don't forget you will need to unplug the wires from inside the car tho (IIRC the wire is fixed on the sensor end)

Are they aftermarket rear parking sensors ?

As mine are below the Bumper strip.

Factory fit are below the strip, dealer fitted and most aftermarket ones are normally in the strip

Cheers :) Mine are on the strip, thanks for the heads up on the sensor wiring.

front inserts on either side pull forwards but centre one goes backwards towards the car :)

side strips are glued on i think.

best bet i'd say is buy some new ones and get them done and simply replace them as non painted ones have a different finish and would require a lot of prep work.

You'll find that in the process of removing the old ones that the fixings break ant it gets twisted all out of shape.

As already suggested just get new ones to replace and it will be a straight swap rather than waiting to get them back and having no strips on.

When I colour coded mine, I bought new side strips as they got damaged & bent on the removal & I just cleaned & painted the existing front & back bumper strips.

One piece of advise if you take the side strips off. Use a rubber wheel that bodyshops use to get the tape residue off. It'll only take minutes rather than hours getting the sticky stuff off:thumbup:

Thanks guys - how much are these strips? :) - also is there any problem leaving the side strips off altogether?

Lastly Oggy, whats this rubber wheel thingy? Not heard of it before.

Cheers

I bought one from E-bay I think it was called a toffee wheel, basically it's a sacrifical wheel which removes the left over adhesive but leaving the paint intact.
