I have a Sep 2002 1.9PD Superb. I believe this can only be on fixed service intervals, which are 10K miles.

For some reason the "Service in 1000 miles" indicator comes on somewhewre between 800 and 1000 miles before the next service is due.

Why on earth would it do this? Arrgghh.

Anyone else suffer the same thing?

Thats normal, its a reminder and it also gives you enough time to book it in with the dealer. Not everyone does 200 miles per week, some including me could cover that mileage in less than 2.

fair enough, I'll ignore it then and go by the book!
