fuel gauge not working!

Featured Replies

Tank full of Shell V Power needle on empty!!! Any ideas...had it serviced recently on way back I noticed it was on empty. Turned engine off then ignition back on...it was fine now approx 1 month later it is just on empty?

Please help...

From that description I'd suspect a loose connection on the sender unit, which is on top of the tank.

If it's not that, then it's probably the sender unit, or a leaky tank float (which fills up with petrol and stops floating if it happens).

It was actually fine this morning on the way to work the next time I looked at it...it was back on empty.

Does that narrow it down?

Can I fix it myself?

Probably the connector then; senders and floats stay broken when they are IME.

It's an easy fix, as long as you don't mind finding the inspection hatch under the boot carpet. Open it, and clean the spade connector(s) attached to the fuel tank. Reassemble them and give them a squirt of WD40.

Thanks for that...its getting worse the yellow engine light came on today...I have been told that I can still use it until diagnostic viewing at AWESOME GTI on 14th March?

I don't see a relationship unless the problem is actually with the fuel pump (which the level sender is built into). If that is the case, you may not make it to the 14th. Give Sarah a call and say I'm (yes, use my name) wondering if you have a fuel pickup or pressure issue, and see if they can slip you in for a code reading earlier.

UPDATE

Today the engine light went off and the fuel gauge is working fine?!!!

Should I still go to 'Awesome GTI' and get it checked out? I think I am more inclined to take it just to be on the safe side.

Its strange this all happened last week after putting the first full tank of SHELL V POWER in the car for a long time?

I'm now almost convinced it's the gauge connector.

That said, there's probably a fault code logged, so the visit to Awesome is still indicated.

Thanks so much for the help...shall I still check the connector? Fuel gauge is fine now as well.

It's up to you. It does mean moving the boot carpet, then finding the right tool(s) for lifting the inspection hatch.

Right...maybe I'll leave it then!
