Coming Home Function

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Bought a new octavia elegance a couple of days ago. I must say that the car has surpassed all of my expectations.

Just a couple of questions that ye may be able to help me with. The headlights stay on constantly when the engine is running. This is not a requirement in Ireland so I think that I can get that sorted when the car goes in for its first service. Doesn't bother me but seems a waste because I ordered the rain sensor and dusk sensors. Also, I am not sure how the coming home function should work. When I approach the car and unlock it, the headlights light up (think this is the leaving home function). Is the coming home function supposed to activate when the car is locked? When I switch off the car, the headlights stay lit, but when I lock it, the headlights go out. I don't think the coming home function should work this way. I have tested it in all the positions (dims, tunnel lights etc). I also checked that the coming home function was turned on in the maxidot. Just like to know exactly how it should work so that the dealer doesn't try to give me the run around when it goes in for service.

Sorry about the long post. Great site by the way.

Thanks in advance

Mike

On my vehicle, unless I press the unlock prior to lock, the headlights stay illuminated for the period set on the maxidot display.

Coming home lights are activated only if you drive the car around and then stop and turn off the engine. They don't stay lit if you just unlock the door and lock it again. Car has to move between :)

Settings seem to be ok if they're on looked through the Maxidot and you have the "auto" position on the light switch.

Thanks fellas

I will take it for a spin tonight and test out the lights when I get back. Spent ages last night locking and unlocking the car in my driveway.

It's a known 'problem' (well more of a programming error) that occurs from the factory. When they set the car up to have the coming home function switched on, it has been known for them to also swich on the daytime running (Volvo style) lights.

The dealer sould be able to rectify it in minutes as there is the option to turn it on and off with their diagnostic computer. TBH it's something they should have picked up on at the PDI.

Which one is the function that turns your lights off if you forget to turn them off?

thats the coming home function. It only works if you leave the lights on when getting out.

Your light switch must be in auto position for it to work.

If it's in auto, and the lights dont stay on after being driven and locked up, then it needs enabling via maxidot. The times for the lights can also be adjusted for both unlocking and lights on, and also come home functions.

So, effectively, can you just leave the light switch itself pointing straight up in the 'auto' position constantly?

If Im reading this right, when you shut the engine off and get out at night, the lights should remain on for the period set in maxidot and then shut off totally not causing any drain on the battery?

Yes, you can leave it either in the auto (tunnel) position, or the normal headlight position. I leave mine in the normal headlight position all the time, as I prefer to drive with dipped headlights during daylight hours from a safety perspective. I did turn off the coming home feature after a few days though (through maxidot), and my lights just turn off as soon as I remove the key from the ignition.

I only found out about the lights shutting off if you leave them in the on position the other day when we had the fog. The auto lights thought it was too bright for headlights so I had to manually turn them on - but I then forgot and of course being auto there is no warning beep when you get out of the car - it was only a day or so later that I noticed the switch was in the normal on position but of course the lights would turn themselves off when I turned the ignition off. Good idea though - I'm not complaining.

I've upped the time on my "leaving home" function as I found I needed enough time to unlock the car, get myself sorted and start the engine - otherwise the lights were going out just before I had time to start and I know the most strain is put on a xenon light when you light the thing.

So do you need the Light Assist thingy AND Maxidot for these functions to work, or will a car with just maxidot do this?

My vRS has neither Maxidot OR Auto lights, and it works... ;)

Hi everyone:)

May I ask how could I change not to switch on/off all the time when a function of Coming/Leaving Home are active in my Octi?

I've got a xenon headlights and not to sure it is normally for the HIDs definitely:(((

Should I change with VAG-COM or any idea?

Audi only switching the fog lights to use Coming/leaving Home Function...

Thanks!

Nope, can be done with vag com like mine, however if you have maxidaot you can fiddle with the time that the lights stay on for, where as without its a case of going through the options.

With reference to another post above about the lights are always on, you might have daytime running lights activated which also can be unset via vag com.
