MK1 Octy VRS - Clicking in 1st gear

Featured Replies

Hi. This is an odd one. Picked up my VRS last night and later on in the evening it started making a 'clicking' noise in first. The sort of noise you'd get when a bit of plastic arch is catching the tread of the wheel sort of noise.

All gears select fine, and it drives perfectly well, no crunching in any gear.

BUT 1st makes this sort of rotary clicking noise. If I pull off from second it doesnt happen.

I was wondering, is it possible that the weighted gearshift thing is rubbing on my airbox and vibrating on it in 1st gear?

Any help is appreciated

Cheers

If you think it might be the linkage rubbing on something, stick it in first and have a look. There's no sort of common known issue there.

yeah i've tried that now, i've got a good 2 inches between the weighted shift and the airbox. odd....

It's not the climate control is it?

I think at this moment in time i have the same or similar problem arising recently too.

I know i need to change my ARB but unsure if this would make that sort of noise.

There doesn't seem to be any probs associated with the noise but will find out soon if ARB change fixes it.

Also i dont think it will be climate control in my case as thats normally turned off in my car and the noise still exists.

Hi, what would be the climate control issue?

Well... on mine, it appears to make a clicking noise when the fans on but I only hear it when stationary. It's quite quiet though

  • Author

hmm. It seems to get louder as I drive on in first, but as soon as I select 2nd it goes.

When I pull off from stationary in 2nd, no noise.

Noise is present with aircon on and off

And not present in reverse either?

If so, I can't think of anything other than the first gear cogs, synchronisers or baulk rings.

no reverse is fine - all of the above arn't cheap id imagine?

Well, it does mean dismantling the gearbox... ;)

Seriously, I can't think of anything else that is that tightly related to a specific gear.

  • Author

yep ive come to that conclusion too. cheers guys.

I have the same problem in 1st gear, exactly as you described.

My gearbox is making quite a bit of noise on idle, put the clutch in and it goes quiet.

new gearbox time perhaps :(

ah mine is fine on idle, and all other gears are fine. its just when driving in first is the problem. Like a cog that is catching on something when its turning...

Which is why I'm sure Capnahab's problem looks like first gear cogs.

Seth, I'm not so sure about yours, because it seems more related to the gear shafts than the cogs. Or it might be the flywheel, if your car has a dual mass unit.

As always, worth checking level/changing gearbox oil before you start pulling it apart.

Also if the thrust bearing (of the clutch) is damaged/broken up you can get 'random' noise.

Well, if you're looking at the box internals, you'll start by taking it off the back of the engine, and I'd hope you'd check the clutch (and thrust bearing) and flywheel at that point. That said, IME a thrust bearing is almost always a screeching noise, usually when you have your foot on the pedal enough to load the bearing.

Yes you're right, it should be obvious. I had noises ranging from a random clicking and then finally 'a bag of bolts' the only time I experienced a failure(with the clutch still working).

well im going to bite the bullet and get it fixed soon. Ill get a price to recon the box, and a price for a scrapper box and see what is more favorable. I'll let you all know what the outcome is...
