I'm a massive fan of Subaru Foresters, I'm on my second one now. However I don't think I can live with 25 odd mpg any more. Ive tried the new diesel Legacy Outback (nice engine, heavy car) and the Scout, which I really like and has a much better level of kit for less money.

The only thing that lets it down is the 140bhp engine. Yeah, I know, I want to have my cake and eat it too! I had a read of the superchips website, they claim they can give around 185 bhp from the 2.0 140 bhp TDI, which should improve overtaking ability greatly. Does anyone have any experience of these chips? I had a look at Jabba and APR but they don't appear to do diesels.

Any other general advice on the Scout would be appreciated too!

Hi, and Welcome to Briskoda!

Regarding a chip for the Scout, Wings of Peterborough have the Skoda franchise and the Superchips franchise, and offer a chip for the 2.0TDi PD engine.They can also supply it on a brand new Scout too, and theres a possibility they have a demo 2.0 with a chip on for a test drive.Justin Wing at Wings is a great guy to deal with, I bought a Skoda off him a few years ago, brilliant experience.Call 01733 296969.

Only had my Scout for a few days, but I can say that overtaking is really not a problem with standard 140bhp engine... Of course more power would be good expecially with 4wd, but I'd rather have 40+mpg.

Other comments with car so far is that driving at motorway speed in the high winds we've been having has felt very comfortable & re-assuring, turning circle is excellent, no-rolling when cornering at reasonable speeds.

Downsides refer more to Octavia range than the Scout in particular: Sun Visors look & feel cheap, struggling to adjust the radio sound properly to listen to spoken word channels such as R4, cruise control quite basic (no display on Maxidot).

Oh, and I'd have liked someking of display on Maxidot which shows when the car is transferring power to rear wheels etc...

Scout remap.

Well....

1 - The scout is a 103kw 2.0 8v BMM engine, not the 103kw 2.0 16v fitted in other cars.

2 - The turbo is a small GT1646.

3 - The DPF will not help.

As a result dont expect to much. I guess that someone will do one soon and you can see there results.

I assume that 165+bhp and 300+lbft is possible.

I believe that the VW ESO has the same engine and upsolute give that 175bhp and 295lbft.

Also check out tuneline.at they have a scout on there.

But from my ring round, including some big gunner by far the best was P-torque.

Very good knowledge of the PDF, mainly from remaping other manifactures over the years giving him heads up on the vag system.

Only problem is they only have a 2wd rolling road and I would want to know what power I'm getting....

Be warned thou, understand what the DPF does for yourself and when they tell you there method of chipping with it, make sure it doesn't remove any vag fail self functions.

We replaced a Subaru Forester with an Octavia Scout TDi and there is just no comparison - the Octavia is miles and miles better. The only downside if you go off road much is that it is definitely not as capable. The ground clearance is less and the approach and departure angles are much worse. Also the 4WD is not full-time like the Forester.

We do use ours off road quite a lot over fields and on rough farm tracks and it has been fine so far, but I wouldn't use it in all the situations I used the Forester in.

Engine is great and much better than the petrol Forester one. It pulls so much better with its good old turbo-diesel torque. Fuel consumption with the Forester was just over 30mpg for us, but is averaging over 46mpg with the Octavia.

Excellent bit of advise there - I too looked into this & the DPF was the thing that kept flagging up as a possible problem, I can live with the 140horses is enough for me on UK roads.

Is is true that the Scout and standard estate 2.0TDI diesel engines are different mechanically? I've driven both and they behave in a very similar way. I thought they are both BKD 16v engines as List of Volkswagen engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Have a look at http://new.skoda-auto.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/Octavia/OctaviaScout_Catalogue_ENG_0507.pdf , this will confirm, but the real give away is that the inlet manifold is at the back of the engine in the same location as all the 1.9 8v, all the 2.0 16v are at the front... :-)

Also slightly off thread, but have you guys noticed how mpg drops off as speed rises?

Did a couple run and then did some calculation using frontal area, coefficent of drag etc...

Basically the analysis showed that at

67 true mph = 50 mpg

70 true mph = 46 mpg

75 ture mph = 40 mpg

this was on tesco diesel so would expect a little better with higher quality fuel, but still 8mph - 10mpg seems crazy......

Also if one was to lower it say 16mm using 4x4 springs mpg would go up by approx 5%.... :-)

Maybe, but the UK catalogue CLEARLY says that the engine fitted to the Scout has 4 valves per cylinder. It is rated at 140bhp but the kW figure is not quoted, although by calculation, of course, 105kW = 140bhp. The output figures for all models using this engine are the same, EXCEPT that for some reason the engine fitted to the Amb/Eleg and L&K models is quoted as having torque of 320 Nm at 1,750-2,500rpm, whereas the 4x4 and Scout models are only credited with this output at 1,750rpm exactly.
