N95 8gb questions.

Featured Replies

I managed to blag a free N95 8gb from Vodafone as an upgrade on Friday. I've moved up from an N73 and just have a couple of questions about the new phone that i can't seen to find in the manual.

1. The N73 turned the screen off after a period of inactivity and just had a small blue LED that flashed every so often. I can't see anything in the new phone's options for this and wondered if it can do the same?

2. When the phone is left for a few minutes it displays the time but when it does it always shows it in landscape rather than portrait. Does everybody's do this?

Cheers

Dave.

Landscape on mine all of the time too.

If I were you I'd look up the de-branding thread as well.

Nice swap Dave

Must be an 8Gb thing that then, the time display; the 'Mk1' doesn't do that :)

And yep, get it de-branded too

Cheers guys..... At least it's not just mine then..... I would have liked the screen off function though to get that little extra out of the battery etc.....

I must admit i was a little disapointed at this phone being a branded model..... The N73's we have were both bought from vodafone and were unbranded.... I thought this one was too but found the name on the back along with some vodafone stuff in the menus. If it hadn't been for getting it for nothing instead of £125 i would have pressed for an unbranded one but when you've stumbled across a ****-up by a member of there staff that meant i got it for nowt i didn't want to cause too much fuss. :D:D:D

Is there much extra gained when de-branding the phone???? As i say our N73's are unbranded and the only differance we found to a matres branded one was that we had fewer apps etc... than he had on his branded N73!!!! Work that one out!!!

**edit**

Just had a search around on the net and it appears from what i can see on various forums that there isn't an updated fw for the N95 8gb phone as yet only the N95. Also the opinion seems to be that the only difference between the vodafone and unbranded versions are a couple of vodafone themes & s/savers and the loss of the voIP function which i'm not bothered about anyway. It looks like the probs that the N95 de-branding cleared up like the wifi & camera slowness are sorted on the 8gb phone anyway as i connected to our wireless router straight away and the camera is faster than both the old N73 and a mates N95 are.

Cheers

Dave.

what version have you got?

*#0000# gives me the latest of V 15.0.015 which is available as branded voda or unbranded Euro1 SW.

TBH, Voda dont butcher their phones too much. Dont bother debranding unless you want VOIP and want to get rid of the Voda start up screen.

Im thinking of selling/swapping my N95 8Gb so I can get a phone that works fully with the BT car kit but is a super phone, best I have had for a while.

Steve

I got rid of mine cause I couldn't get on with it and that download contacts program was getting on my t1ts.

the other reason to debrand is that vodaphone will release your firmware upgrades and can be well behind the times, they are still on an april 2007 release of the N95 firmware where as nokida upgraded this year.

Ill disagree there, I am running V15.0.015 (or whatever I said above), that is the latest version for both Voda and Unbranded (Euro1 Product Code).

Voda FW is about 4 - 6 weeks behind Euro1.

If your relating this to the original (silver) N95 then voda has a later version out, think it was december 2007.

PS, have a look at All About Symbian Forums - Powered by vBulletin

i was talking about the N95, hence calling it an N95 and not an N95 8Gb :P

and when i upgraded to the latest version of the firmware on my N95 ealier this year the latest version available from nokia for a vodafone branded phone(what mine is/was) it was from april 2007.

Yep, the one thing that annoys me with my N95 - can't download phone book to my Alpine :thumbdwn:

Which carkit do you have?

Are you using the download contacts program - you'll get phone book but not recent calls.
