Bit of work on the Avant

Featured Replies

I had the dogs for the weekend, which means staying at my parents. So whilst I had some down time, I thought I'd clean the throttle body out. So whilst taking of the rocker breathers (is this the correct term ?), I come across the following (see pic);

So guess my next job will be lifting the rocker covers and having a ganda to see the state of the mayonasing.

Looks perfectly normal for a car that has done a lot of short runs IMHO. Personally I'd warm it up, use a good quality flush and do an oil change.

I'd also obviously wipe off any obvious stuff before you start that.

Breathers always fill with crud in cold weather if you do short trips (less than 30 mins warm). It might be worth either cleaning the breather through or replacing the breather filter as once they are blocked they are not that easy to clean properly and will just lead to ever increasing mayo.

Giving the old girl a good work over soon. The breather pipes are being replaced, the mayo was also in the plastic ducting before the throttle body, I think I need to just give the engine a bit of TLC.

Its on 157K miles at the mo and I intend to run it for a least a year now... if not more.

The setup of the engine is a little more complicated than the usual 4 pot... as I have double everything on a lot of small components (gaskets etc).

so for my list of parts that need looking at replacing are as follows;

cylinder head / rocker box cover breathers

Throttle body to manifold gasket

Rocker Cover gaskets

IAC (N71)

IAC to manifold gasket

Thermostat

G12 Coolent

Viscous coupling for front radiator fan

Forget the mayonnaise coming out of the breather pipes of your Audi - dogs appear to be leaking out of that C5!!!

I'll get me coat...

lol, yeah Bassett and Bournville are like shadows.... they follow me everywhere. Bassett was sat waiting for me to throw the breather pipe like a stick.
