conti-sport contact 3

Featured Replies

well I need a full set of new boots....I have tried the sport pilot 2's and they were good..but expensive

my little local guy can get the sport contact 3's and was just wondering if they were worth a stab?

cost is reasonable (well cheaper than the pilot sport 2's!!)

so just wondering if they are decent or better then the conti sport 2's? (which are the same price as the 3's )

Imho, I would avoid the Conti's at all costs. The Michelins are expensive and perform better than the Conti's in pretty much every area. I'd be looking at Falken FK452's or Toyo T1-R's which offer similar performance to the Michelins but at a fraction of the cost....

Chris

I've not had Conti sports on my octavia, but I did have them on my Megane II. I swapped them for Kumho KH-11s which were better and half the price.

On the Octavia I've had Bridgestones (noisy), Kumho KH-11s (pretty good and cheap but lateral grip could have been a little better?) and currently got Michelin Pilot Primacy HPs. The Michelins are excellent. In particular, my fuel economy is stunning. The Primacy HPs have the lowest rolling resistance of any normal tyre. Up and down the M1 / M69 between Sheffield and Coventry I'm getting mid 60s on the computer. I think this equates to about 56 - 57 real.

Have a look at:

Tyre guide | Total Tyre Guide | Products | Auto Express

Tests were done on 215/55R16 on Passats - so similar size to the Octavia.

I agree with the test that Conti Premium Contacts are a decent tyre - especially if you are looking for lower road noise.

I have recently put the new Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric on my Vrs. They replaced Conti 2's and are much better in every aspect. Quieter, grippier, look nicer and are cheaper. Got them for £104 per corner for 225/40/18's.

Also, they came top in a recent tyre test conducted by EVO.

I am tempted by the goodyears as well..will see what price he can do them for

I have conti 3's on the back of the car and the noise is vastly reduced over the OEM Bridgestones.

My fronts needs replacing (again) soon and I am still debating over what to go for. The Eagle F1 asymmetrics look good.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 gets my vote, seem pretty long lasting too. Conti's only lasted 14k.

I had Conti sports on my Mk1 Ocatvia Vrs, they're great in the dry, poo in the wet, wear quick and are expensive.

Had Pirelli Pzero on my Fiesta ST, reasonably price but also no good in the wet.

Won't be using either brand on my new(ish) Vrs.

I'm not a fan of conti tyres especially the lack of grip at 3mm down.

I'd probably go for either falken FK452 (currently running these) or Michelin Pilot Primacy HP for longer lasting tyres that perform pretty well.

Hi cheezemonkhai,

could you please tell more about your Falken tyres. I'm on OEM Dunlop Sport SP1 (17') and I hate them. They are very noisy, bad grip on dry, bad breaking... In mid of the summer I'll change them so new tyres would last till I sell the car (and go for new octy again).

I'm reading so much about Falken 452. In my case road noise is important issue. As I live in south of Portugal, there is no snow here and only maybe 10-20 rainy days a year. So, main issues are:

- Road noise

- Dry grip

Thanks

Hi I've just put my 452 on the back of the car and noticed a massive decrease in noise, even with a layer of dynamat back there.

- Road noise is IMHO lower than the OEM tyres and pretty low even on poor surfaces.

- Dry grip is truly stunning once they have worn in. When they do reach the limit they give you a good amount of warning before they progressively let go.

Additionally:

- Wet grip is actually very very good even in standing water.

- Wear, I've got 3-4mm left on them after 20-25k miles on the front wheels.

- Cost - 205/55/R16 91 ZR are £60 a corner fully fitted for me.

The down side I would say is that they are very slippery until you have worn off the mould release compound.

Look nice too :D

I've also had use of a PD140 with sports suspension & 17" wheels with the primacy HP's on it. They were also very good for a touring tyre and I predict a life of about 35-40k miles.

i am almost at the stage of needing to replace my front conti-2s........after 8100 miles :o

looks like i will go for the falken 452s also

Ive got Conti 3's on the front of mine now, only done about 800 miles on them but they appear to be pretty good IMO.

ATB, Jon.

I've been running my FK452s on the front for about 6k miles now and still can't believe how good these tyres are in both the wet and the dry.

I checked the wear recently expecting the worst as I usually get 10k miles out of a set on the front and couldnt believe that they hardly looked worn at all, even the smaller grooves that were about 1mm deep when new are still visible. Incredible for the hammering they get ;)

I'm gonna put my Potenza S03s back on the front for the dryer (lol - if there is such a thing in scotland) season coming up and try and wear them out so I can get 452s all round come next winter. I thought the S03s were stunning (certainly are in the dry) when I got them but they suffer from the usual Bridgestone wet weather grip (or lack of). The sidewalls are super-stiff and do make the car handle very nice. The problem was that after I got my remap I was getting wheel spin in 4th  when the roads were very wet at the start of last winter.

Rotated to back and put 452s on front... problem solved

As others said, they are very progressive... unusual for a tyre with such immense grip to give away so gracefully when they finally do lose it, but just back off and you're back in control.

So yeah, another vote for the FK452s here.

Thanks guys,

Falken 452 will be my choice in mid summer.

Can´t wait to get them...
