Caliper Guide Pin

Featured Replies

Some how  the hole for one of my front brake caliper guide pins has become stripped (oops)

I'm planning to fit a Helicoil, but does anyone know what size thread kit i need? (2001 110 TDi)

Thanks in advance

Thats not uncommon, usually happens when they have been over tightened. Im not sure if there is enough metal to get a helicoil in there. We usually replace the hub and bearing to be honest. But I think thats more to do with company safety policy and using helicoils on brake parts.

Thank Lummox - That sounds alot more expensive than i'd hoped!

Might try the helicoil anyway on the grounds that if it doesn't work i'd have to replace the hub regardless.

Short of someone knowing the threadsize, can anyone explain how i'd go about measuring the thread and translating it in the an M x Fine/Medium/Course?

I'd bet you can find a good number of FS III hubs at breakers.

I'd also try VAG parts and just get the new hub/carrier. At the end of the day it's the brakes and if the coil doesn't work you will potenitally be without effective brakes.

Hi

I face the same problem, but definitely do not want to replace the carrier. For now the pin is steel epoxy glued to the carrier, but I'd much prefer helicoil. I agree there is not much metal left to work with and it's brittle.

Has anyone tried using helicoil to fix calliper guide pin socket thread on FSIII calliper? Did it work?

What is the guide pin thread size? M8x1.25?

I do not have guide pin at hand, and need badly to order helicoil kit before this weekend.

After reading various technical specs etc which said Helicoils had been designed for use on brakes i did fit one, and haven't had any problems with it since - i'd even say the pin feels like it's in stronger than before.

The size you need is M9 (nine) x 1.25 (for the FS III brakes)

It's not a common size, I ended up getting a Draper kit from somewhere online which came with the coils, an 'insert tool' and the correct size tap.

In the end it took about 10mins to fit once the kit had arrived

Hope this helps
