Air Mass Meter?

Featured Replies

Well, some will remember my issues with the little orange EPC light coming on and never going away.

I picked my car up early thursday morning to be told that they couldn't find a anything wrong with it, no fault codes so they'd reset it.

The garage said they'd had a few 2.0 come in with this recently and it was something with the "Air Mass Meter".

I've got no idea what this is, what it does, how serious a problem it is. Given that they all insist the cars is still perfectly safe to drive, how important is it that I actually get this done? Can anyone enlightnen me please...???

I ask because a new one will be about

IMHO, get it done. Been there, similar problem, only cost me

If the EPC light came on, then there *was* a fault code - whether or not the garage was able to understand that code, or be able to actually fix a problem, is a seperate matter. Some garages think "reset it and it might go away" is a fix.

Suggest try another garage when the light comes on again, or find someone with VAGcom and check it yourself \ research the code yourself. It's cheaper and ther only way to be sure.

Right....

Aiming for a Skoda specialist i guess. Not that i don't trust the local dealer, but seems like they might be losing it on the tech side (did they ever solve your problems Ian?)

Alternatively, anyone in the (very central) manchester/rochdale area with VAGcom? I'm willing to buy you some beers or something for using your gear........

The last dealing I had with my local dealer, they said I needed a new engine at my cost.

(The same engine we fixed ourselves, and I'm driving about with running fine, in fact better than ever at the moment)

Yeah, i'm getting similar vibes from them (assuming we're both talking about

Powdered Rhino _ / French _ / Cape _

with an ERS on the end.

Sadly, I'm not very mechanically minded, so "fixing it" myself isn't really an viable option.

Time for a trade up/down to a Fabia diesel i think.......

Yes, it's the MAF. For reasons beyond me, the ESP / traction control light becomes lit by a faulty MAF "signal too low" reading as well as the CEL.

What you *need* is a new ECU

I'm seeking final confirmation here - I'm not a vRS owner, so I really am that stooopid......

The MAF is the same as the "Air Flow Meter" that the dealer refers to.

the link below is a good idea and easily acheived by a moron like me.

- click on the link imaginitively entitled "maf" on the left....

Maf Cleaning

Yep, MAF = Mass AirFlow meter. Cleaning is worth a go, although not always effective. Even if it does work, you'll still need Vag-Com or similar to reset the error code and switch out the warning light so I would recommend having a look at the measuring blocks first (before cleaning). If the measuring blocks are stupidly low then you might as well buy a new MAF anyway because cleaning seems to be a temporary fix. But whatever you do, get it done ASAP.

what the hell are they?

mind you, as mines probably one of those dodgy batches of bosch ones that were talked about on the link i posted, i guess i'll have to bite the bullet a lot sooner than later........ roll on payday, i don't want to touch my savings (far too little of them  )
