Octavia VRS camshaft actuator

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Go a 2003 Octavia VRS estate 116000 miles.

Engine management light has come on recently and car has started running erraticaly, missing under power. Has been "looked at" by a generic code reader that i have not seen. Apparently no fault code but the description of fault is "camshaft position actuator A bank 1 timing over retarded"

It is due for a cambelt replacement shortly but a couple of hoursspent searching the 'net leads me to believe this is not the root cause.

Any further help or info on camshaft position actuators or how to proceed from here woul be gratefuly accepted

Regards Simon

At a wild guess I would say that the cam position sensor is knackered

Thanks but is it likely to be the actuator or the sensor ?

Afaik there is a sensor positioned on the cam for timing purposes which if knackered would cause your car to run like pooh. By over retarding or over advancing the timing when faulty.

IMHO that code refers to the actuator instead of sensor.

I am totally untrained in this matter and this is all speculation on my behalf and I may be barking up the wrong tree !!!

And I sure someone who knows more can enlighten us at some point

HTH

IIRC if the ECU is anything like the PD one, a fault would be logged to say the Camshaft sensor is crackered...

the engine would still run OK because it would take the feed off just the crank sensor
