Engine Tappets?

Featured Replies

Well my car is making a funy noise when at idle. On start up at cold it is fine but after 5 mins or so when u stop at a junction you can hear the engine ticking over realy loud more like a diesel. Now the problem is only when at Idle when driving or given some revs it goes away.

I was told this could be engine tappets but I haven't a clue what they are. Trying to research them though would I be right in thinking tappets would occur more when the engine is cold? where as my noise is only when it is warm.

The other thing it could be is the chain slipping (the noise does sound very much like a chain type of noise) or crankshaft but as the noise doesn't appear when I am driving I ruled this out as surley you would get the noise all the time.

Cheers for any advise.

It's not the timing chain, since the Fabia doesn't have one.

Unless it needs a service it shouldn't be tappets either, because it's got hydraulic tappets.

The 1.4 MPI has a timing chain. :)

I sit corrected. In which case it may be the chain or tensioner, but I'd expect to hear that hot and cold, and for the noise to increase with revs.

For the OP, could you give us an indication of mileage?

Sorry fellas should have said it's not a Fabia it's a Corsa 1ltr with chain 46000 miles.

It just had a service & Mot last week when I traded it in for my Fabia.

Dead easy then; take it back to the people you got it from, and start talking about "fitness for purpose".

Check the engine oil level !

Nick,

Had one of those 3 cyc corsa along time ago what a heap of junk, it has a chain and a tensioner which works of oil pressure mine sounded like that a 28000 miles changed chain and tensioner as it had siezed hence rattle.
