Hi from Perth, Australia - need advice thanks

Featured Replies

Hi, I am so very close to buying a 2.0L TDI octavia 6speed manual. Skoda only arrived recently on our shores (about october 2007), so little is know locally concerning their quality, therefore I need help!! I understand the engine in these cars is by VW, but can anyone inform me on the long term reliability of these engines. What sort of life expectancy should you expect from this diesel compared to the petrol 1.8T ? I am choosing between this model and a honda accord euro Honda - Showroom - Accord Euro

I am not exactly blown away buy the looks of this car, but the build quality seems good and the fuel economy seems awesome. The practical side of me is drawn to the skoda whilst the sure and safe bet seems to be the honda. Please Help!!!!!

welcome to briskoda

Hi. I think you'll be more than impressed with the Octavia. Its all Audi and VW parts mechanically so should be very reliable and if looked after properly you'll be looking at 100's of thousands of miles.. eventually..! In fact, the Octavia came first in a recent UK survey for customer satisfaction.

Welcome :)

Welcome mate!

We've had the 'new' (VW) Skodas over here for almost 10 years and to be honest they're more then a match for most Euro/Oriental cars. The Octys seem to be some of the best rated cars on the market at the moment so you're pretty safe in the knowledge you won't be taking a gamble against the useability/reliability of the Honda.

As for the Petrol/Diesel debate, I'm now firmly on the diesel side so could be a bit biased ;). If you're looking for longevity then (personally) diesel all the way, should give you well over 100,000miles (160,000km) with no problems at all.

Hope he doesn't mind but try and search out Rob, top bloke and Brisky's Ambassador 'Down South' :D

He's in NZ but can probably answer any specific questions that you've got better than us Northern lot.

Hello and Welcome to briskoda.net.

Hello and Welcome to Briskoda :D

Hello & welcome

Ben

Hello there.

The Accord Euro is due to be replaced any time soon in the UK so it's not a brand new design , but the 2.2 CRDTi engine in there is a cracking one and won't give you any trouble.

Equally , the 2.0 TDI in the octavia has been available for nearly 4 years and is a development of the 1.9TDI that's been around for at least a decade. A properly serviced engine should be good for a couple of hundred thousand miles. Obviously the rest of the car should be showing signs of age by then , but that's true of all cars. Mine has done 50000 miles in 2 years with no mechanical problems other than a creaking noise from the suspension which was eventually fixed.

Performance wise they are pretty similar but the Octavia will be likely to get a few MPG more than the Honda and will be cheaper to buy. The Honda is a bit bigger , but both are good cars

My son was in a MK1 octy Taxi with just over 264000 mles on it and it sounded fine.

If that isnt a tribute to the engine, I dont know what is.

Recommend you test drive, that should help you decide.

I'm very grateful for your help. It's good to get reassurance because I really want the 2.0 TDI skoda, but I am cautious since this manufacturer is new to australia. I have now test driven the Honda Accord Euro and the skoda, and the skoda feels more like a drivers car with a firmer drive and more responsive gear changes, it gave me more of a thrill to drive. I used to own a subaru WRX in 1999 when they were rather ugly to look at, but the raw power and build quality seduced me so I had to have one. I am getting similar feelings with the octavia now. Thanks again!!

Hi and a very big welcome.

I am not a pom and so you are OK here!

Have no worries as Skoda cars are great, and ultra reliable.

And welcome Burkie!!

The Mk2 Octavia is getting quite popular over here in NZ but the kiwis are still having trouble distinguishing modern VAG diesels from their old Toyota trucks from the 80s

I haven't driven the Mk2 vRS but I have driven an Accord Euro and I thought my old-shape vRS was a much better, more interesting drive than the Accord.

The Accord will probably have less faults in 10 years' time than the Skoda. Then again maybe it won't as build quality seems to be pretty similar on both, as far as you can tell from a new car.

When I was over in Sydney and Melbourne I noticed lots of VWs and Audis, so I guess there are as many in Perth. The Mk2 Octavia is based on the same mechanicals as the Mk5 Golf and Audi A3 if that helps you at all.
