password protecting pdf files?

Featured Replies

I've just scanned a document on to my pc which I wish to password protect. Is there any way of doing this. I just want to stop anyone viewing the document by clicking on it. There is no file save as options for passwords as there is in excel/word.

I don't have the writer just acrobat reader 7 on my pc, the pdf being created from my canon scanner.

Thanks

It will be buried in the options of the cannon scanner, if it's available.

Password-protecting pdf documents in adobe acrobat is done within the options menu and not suring the save IIRC.

If it's nothing super-confidential, I can password protect it for you. Drop me a PM if you want with the password :)

As above: Creating a password'ed :) document can be done from the security setting within Acrobat. I doubt this is available within the normal reader version. Other option would be to encrypt the document

What about putting it in a ZIP file and putting passwd for that?

Or using File Mangler to set read and copy permission to owner only?

Interesting,,, Is this easy to crack? as we are using this method to transfer files with sensitive info at work between us and another company!

In that case, I would strongly recommend buying a proper encryption package, and putting secure transfer methods in place (eg, use a courier service, seal the media in an envelope and tape up all the edges, then put that envelope in another one before handing to transfer service, keep a formal 3 person [registrar, witness to dispatch and recipient {who should be the other company's registrar}] register of transfers).

Be sure to get this right, the Acrobat protection is easy to get round ;).

Use something like this SecureZIP (currently free) and encrypt with the AES256 option with a long (at least 10 characters) and complex (numbers, upper/lower case, symbols) password.

Oh, and DON'T forget the password, or you will be stuffed!

Get the DWP or HMRC to send it for you - they are tops for document security! ;)
