Is it worth it?

Featured Replies

I've been lookin at "newer" cars for some time, and had a lusting for VW Phaetons for some time...

I;ve seen a V8 model for less than 20k, but its only a few months newer than my 04 Superb. The price has been dropped by more then £2000 in the last few days so should I go for it. As its been for sale for around 3 month, and no interest, should I be really cheeky and try my luck at getting them down more...?

Anyone have any history with the V8 VAG engine as I know nothing about it?

Key question.. Can u fit a towbar?

An awesome car. I'm always surprised it's not more popular.

If you can live with V8 petrol economy, then go for it

I'd certainly be bargaining the price down, given the amount of time on sale.

Epic motors...

Steve

I would have one if i could afford to run it.. love them!

Top-end VW's have Citroen-rivalling depreciation, which is why they don't make attractive new purchases, which in turn means they don't come onto the second-hand market very often. There used to be a Passat W8 in my works car park, and after doing a bot of 'ooh, I like the look of that' Googling, I found it went like the clappers but was worth about 2p after 3 years. Someone round the corner from us at home has just changed from a Phaeton to a Bentley Flying Spur - I wonder if they realise it's no different to going from a Mondeo to an XF? ;)

Without sounding like the late lamented Welshy, it'd be a fantastic second-hand buy, although I don't think he'd have approved of the petrol V8! :D

A W8? I could understand a W9 or W12, or even a W6 or W15.

Or the lack of mileage ;)

:D

I remember watching some reviews on youtube - they are really nice cars. Little touches like the headlight washers firing one after another so you don't loose the light at night.

Just buy it ! :D

I wasn't commenting on the car as a whole, just on the implied engine configuration of 2 banks of 3 cylinders and one bank of 2.

It's not, though - it's two narrow-angle V4s with a common crankshaft. It doesn't look like a 'W' as such. My understanding is something along the lines of:

Ok; That would probably make this the first true W engine ever made!

This summarises it quite well, I thought.

Steve

Agreed; anything I'd previously seen described as a "W engine was probably more of a "U engine" U engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but built using V-engine blocks rather than straight blocks.
