Wiring loom - 12v ignition wire always on?

Featured Replies

I am installing a carPC into my oct 2. In order for it to turn on & off with the car, i need to wire the switch to a 12v ignition wire. So when the ignition is on/off, the PC will be turned on/off.

Initially I thought it was a simple matter of using the OEM wiring loom 7 using the +12v ignition wire that the headunit uses. Having connected it all up however, I am finding that the 13v ignition wire seems to be a permanent 12v, ie turning he car on/off has no effect on it.

this rings bells when i used to be able to turn the radio on/off despite the ignition being off. That being said, i also remember the radio turning on/off with the ignition when I got into & out of the car.

Can anyone clarify whats going on with this wire? I don't want to have to use another one because the wiring loom i'm using, plugs into the OEm wiring loom meaning I dont have to cut into any of the car's wires themselves.

Hi Andehh

The problem I think you are having is on can-bus controlled cars you don't have a 12v+ Ign feed, its all done by the ECU,

This is the type of thing you need (just a example) http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/8598.html

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response mate, that makes sense. Is there any other way around it without spending £22? All i can think of i hard wiring in a switch of some kind. That would work, wouldn't it?

Hi Again,

Yes it would work putting a switch in, but take the feed direct from the battery(via a fuse of course) so you don't interfere with the

can-bus wiring

But have a search around to see if you could get that device cheaper (it was the first I found when I did a search) and would be

a neater job, and then you would know if you had the keys in your pocket, you would know it was off, but on a switch you would

be wondering " Have I switch it off ? "

i would just run a wire from the car battery with a iline fuse and mybe a relay then a switch

I have all ready said that, Please keep up

Surely running a wire into the fusebox (at the end of the dash) is easier than running one directly to the battery?

I did this with mine to power my Camera locator, there are several unused fuse slots (both switched and perm live that you can use)

I had the same problem when fitting a handsfree carkit to my Fabia II. I used an ignition sense module at first, but it didn't work very well. I eventually found an 'piggyback fuse holder' when fitting my Parrot carkit, you can see an image of it here: MKI9200 Installation

Basically there should be 12v switched feeds in the fusebox, a quck check with a multimeter should easily find them (Don;t forget to place car in neutral, and remove your key when switching off as mine shows 12V live until the key is removed!) I found a vacant fuse holder and plugged the piggyback connector in. The connectors can be found on eBay, you may find them independant car dealers, they're about £8.00, far cheaper than the ignition sense module and don't require plicing into the car's loom so it can be easilty removed if necessary.
