I am looking to buy a 50k - 70k mile Octy VRS (approx 55 model). I have owned the MKI VRS for about 3 years and have been happy with it but now i am looking at the MKII and do not really know much about them. Any info you can provide about what spec is best, what to look for, what goes wrong, what to avoid etc would be most helpful.

I have seen a 55 plate black vrs with 70k miles for about £5,500 - would something like this be a good buy or is it just at the age and mileage where you have to start replacing lots of things?

Also i note that estates seem rare and often a good amount dearer. As it goes i prefer the estate both on practicality and looks but given the cost may have to settle for a hatchback.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Well mine is an 07 with 53k on the clock and still runs like when it was new.

I'd be looking for FSH hopefully on the fixed schedule.

Most importantly the car should have had it's timing belt changed. If it hasn't that would have to be done ASAP.

A 55 is before the free options deal so you might have to look around to get the options you want.

Jumbo box /armrest is handy as it the dual zone climate.

17" alloys were standard rather than 18". I wouldn't personally insist on 18".

It'd be worth checking on that car if the ABS module (Teeves Mk60 fault) as been replaced. It's not the massive expense it once was now there is a kit available.

Cruise control often goes wrong but it's a 5min fix with a cotton bud and some contact cleaner.

Rear tyres can be prone to saw-toothing. Not something mine has done. The rear tyres also wear heavily on the inside. My last set looked superficially fine after 20k but the inner edges were badly worn. Didn't pick it up until it was highlighted at MOT (not an MOT fail surprisingly).

Check the boot for water (screenwash really) in the rear wheel well. The pipes can block if the screenwash dries and the joints pop.

Other than that they seem pretty solid cars. I'd just be looking for general condition and signs that the car has been looked after.

A bit of wear on the drivers leather panels seems to be normal.

Trade ins for TFSI are crap so don't pay over the odds dealers are marking them up a lot. If you can get a good one they're a real bargain imho.

thanks. with regards to the free options, when did that start and what kind of things could you specify? i bet that was some deal when the cars were new as some of the options cost an absolute fortune.

there are a few things i am partial to - such as 18" wheels and a sunroof. anything over and above these is all a bonus to me

You can buy mine if you like for £6,700? (07 plate) Although I just hit a deer. It is having a brand new bonet, wing and bumper fitted professionally as we speak. No damage to chasis or anything, Just cosmetic.

50k miles MKII in magic black. 2 main dealer services and 1 independent. Just been serviced 2 months ago. Also got the extras with 18" alloys, front & rear elec windows and dual zone climate control and jumbo box. 4 brand new michelin PS3 tyes too

Mine is an 07 and the option were out earlier that year. The deal was jumbo box, 18" alloys, dual zone climate and rear electric windows for nothing. I think they were worth about £1500 on the option book.

I wished I'd got maxidot (left it too late) and I did added cruise control (£180) but I don't miss anything else. A sunroof is going to be a rare option I'd guess with every model having air.

The other main options were xenons, and parking sensors. I don't think leather or heated seats could be specced then.

Calipers turned from green to red about then but they're exactly the same. VAG was just saving on paint. GTIs are red too.

Thanks for the offer but it is more than i have to spend. i think i will have to limit myself to a 55 plate with a good few miles as i only have £5k to £5.5k to spend.

I'd think on 55 plates you should be able to get something with lower mileage than 80k. £5.5k is about the trade in price for an 07 hatch.

It pays to shop around. I bought a 56 reg in the Summer with 26,000 miles. FSH (but on variable, I'm not sure how to go about changing back to a fixed 10,000 mile service rota). Options were 18" alloys, dual zone, jumbo box, MDF, rear parking sensors. Only thing I wish it had was cruise control and xenons. It also had a years tax, and had just had the cambelt changed.

I paid £9,000 for that, which having read this thread, makes me think I've been ripped off!

Climate and 'leccy windows were part of the same option.

VRS seems to get a big mark up on forecourts. Dealer say no one wants them offer duff price then whack £3/4k on them.

I think your price is right but you should find a lower mileage. I got my '08 60k VRS TFSI for £6800 from cargiant

Put it this way, the trade in offers on my 07 TFSI hatch after £800 of tyres, cam belt and service were all about £5500 which was the CAP price.

It didn't matter how clean or well kept the car was the dealers just see a big turbo petrol that they think will sit on the forecourt for months.

When I was looking to trade similar cars were being sold for anything up to £11k.

It just got my goat that I'm being told the car isn't worth much while they sit for sale for nearly double what I'm being offered.

Prices have certainly dropped a lot more very recently.
