HOWTO: Replace Camshaft Position Sensor (BMP, 2.0PD)

Featured Replies

Difficulty: Fairly straight forward.

Estimated Time: Took me 1.5 hrs.

1) Remove both parts of the engine cover

2) On the left of the engine is a large induction pipe, this needs to be removed. Each end is held on by a simple spring clip, using a screwdriver gently each of these off and place them somewhere safe. Unscrew the Torx headed screw that holds the pipe to the engine block (the screw is retained with the pipe once undone). Now remove the fuel lines from the clips on the pipe and gently ease the pipe under these and away from the engine.

3) Remove the upper part of the cambelt cover by releasing the 2 clips holding it in place (one on the front of cover and one on back) and lift upwards to remove from engine.

4) If you look with a torch close to the camshaft drive you will see the sensor and its securing bolt.

5) Remove this bolt, but take care not to let it fall into cambelt gears.

6) Disconnect the sensor wiring plug which is situated on the front of the engine.

7) Remove the grommet close to the sensor otherwise you will not get the sensor out.

8) Remove sensor from engine

9) Feed new sensors wiring through the hole (do not connect or replace grommet yet).

10) Line up the new sensors locating pin and bolt hole and put in position

11) Secure the sensor with the bolt removed earlier, route wiring back to connector and plug in.

12) Replace grommet.

13) Continue reassembly, including replacing the cambelt cover, the induction pipe with its clips, reclip the fuel lines.

14) You should be back together now and in a position to start and run the car.

15) To remove the engine light, you will need to have the fault code cleared by your dealer or VCDS.
