Eastern europe, here I come...

Featured Replies

Hi All, this year Im planning a long driving holiday with a difference to the now usual ones Ive done (visiting France/Spain/Germany/Switzerland/Italy)...

This July/August Im taking Beti into Eastern Europe, somewhere where Ive never previously set foot!

The rough idea is currently looking like this:

From Calais...

Through France, Belguim and Germany to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. I'll be staying at a mix of camp sites and cheap hotels From Calais to Slovenia and I'll be travelling with two friends in two vehicles, one of them aboard Beti as a passenger, the other driving his Jeep Wrangler.

I dont have a clue what to expect and somehow imagine it being quite different to the usual central European jaunts I quite regularly do. We are estimating two to three days and nights at each of the above places so although we are doing a little more than just driving straight through the country, I guess we wont get to see much of each place.

I'd love to hear any advice on the above countries ie things not to be missed, where to stay, where to eat, any particularly good driving roads to take in enroute, cultural advice etc etc etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry no one responded to your question, but I hope you had a great and interesting trip. I have traveled all over Europe; West,Central, and East, all different but all memorable. What was the best part of your trip? I like Slovenia quite a bit, and driving in Romania is quite nice too. I dislike driving through Poland. The highway isn't very complete and you have to pay small amounts too often. It would be better to charge a higher price once. And driving through the towns and villages is a pain. Average speed limit is about 50kmh.

Yeti_Man - your trip looks like it should take at least 3 months :D.

If I was to do it I'd go through specialist travel guides and ask people you might know who are from those countries.

It is a truism but there is so many things to see in each o those countries that you could spent all of the time in just one :).

I'd choose a route and then see what is close and then modify it to suite.

Travle guides and google are your best friend here - at least that is what I do ;)

That post was from February. ;-)

Trip done and dusted and a great success. Almost 6000 miles iirc in five and a bit weeks. :)

LOL

Have you done a write-up on it?
