kenwood dnx520vbt wiring confusion, please help

Featured Replies

hi everyone,

as lately the missus bought a vw jetta 1.6tdi DSG it came with a kenwood dnx520vbt unit installed, the dealer told me the last owner got it fitted from them replacing the RCD 300 I think, and they used the services of a company called SAT NAV systems,

she does not like the kenwood system for some reason so iam trying to install the Columbus from my old octy in this car, I have done this installation once before and both cars being VAG family it should be plug and play!! THATS until I opened up the jetta and found a minefield of wiring behind the kenwood, gave me the spins, iam ok at powering a bulb with a battery but that stuff is way over my head,

just to make the point clear so that you guys could suggest something I took some photos:DSC_0030.jpgDSC_0031.jpg

as you could see the quadlock oem connector has wiring coming in and out of it that are retrofitted, plus there is also this rectangular box unit attached to it, the quadlock connector is standard VAG and will connect to Columbus or any variant but It has wires stuffed in it.

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions in this regard, caz so far I haven't been able to do anything to it, If you would like to see full size pics to get a better view here are the direct links.

any help guys, iam seriously thinking of selling this and getting back to a simple RCD radio for the time being

I would say no one would be able to diagnose that from a photo, who knows what someone has installed into the quadlock. It won't be impossible though, you probably just need to employ an expert to do it for you - not worth messing it up.

what's stuffed in there?

looks like some sort of quadlock to iso adaptor with possibly a can bus interface? something like this : http://www.xt-audio....ck-kenwood.html

What's left if you remove the adaptor from the quadlock?

yes mate the link is bang on, this seems to be the stuff, it seems they have modified the OEM connector, I think I would call the dealership that did it and tell them to take it back to OEM status and make it good for RNS510,

I cant remove the adaptor from the quadlock caz the wires are crimped or something in it, the black box is a can bus for sure.

Ok - it looked to me as if the quadlock was inserted in to a socket and so i thought they'd separate - didn't realise they were crimped

yes mate, that's what got me stumped, the link that you posted would have been an easy one caz it would have fitted into the OEM, they seem to have crimped the whole thing and I cant even tell between the factory and aftermarket wiring.

Seems strange, to me at least, that the installer would have gone though the effort of getting an adapter and then crimping straight through it. :S

Doesn't look like there's anything changed on the car side of the quadlock either. Does look like a couple of extra cables in the dash though (GPS and aerial booster?)

Quadlock can be a bit of a git to undo as well.

You're only just down the hill, would be happy to pop down and give you a second pair of eyes on this. :)

cheers for the link mate, I think if It was installed properly with the adaptor would have been easier, I talked to Volkswagen dealer I got the car from and they said that their service department installed it so iam going to press them to revert it back to the OEM settings, iam sure iam entitled to it being under warranty,

and yeah sure whenever you are round my neck of the woods you are more than welcome to have a look, would appreciate your input, iam calling VW again today hopefully ill make them clean up their mess.

Got nothing doing for the rest of today (friday) :)
