TomTom mounting

Featured Replies

Ok. The dilemma is: I utterly despise windscreen suction mounts, they get in the way view wise.

In my Fabia I had one of those cheap 3M sticky plastic discs from Halfords to provide a surface to stick the suction mount to, and even then I ended up using superglue as the suction thing kept coming loose launching the satnav in to the handbrake, actually pulled the USB B connector off the PCB too tho luckily one of our hardware guys kindly soldered a new one on for me.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I want to stick that disc (or a new one) to the Rapid's dash and brodit still list their centre mount proclip as 'under development'.

Anyone got any bright ideas as an alternative approach? No point replacing the stereo for built in satnav, those units are insanely expensive and no better than my TomTom One from my experience.

I also hate windscreen mounted sat navs! I bought a air vent mount from Amazon which works well .

I've seen what looks like a small 'bean' bag to hold some sat navs - colleague has one and never had any issues with it.

Sorry can't be more helpful!

I'd suggest just replacing the stereo and retrofitting the factory nav! You can pick up the Amundsen unit for less than £250 of eBay and its easy enough to fit. You could probably sell the standard radio on to recoup some of that money plus it should in theory add to the residual value.

Nice thing with the factory nav is it comes up on the Maxidot display so you don't have to take your eyes of the road, and the sound comes out through the car speakers over the radio/ music.

I use Brodit ProClip mounts to hold TomTom satnav, have been using them on all 3 Skodas I had. Install is simple and quick, and they are robust enough. My satnav is actually an old Axim x51v WM6 and TomTom Navigator with up to date maps, placed in charging cradles. I have 2 units interchangeable between cars, and can take both (one as backup) on trips across Europe.

No Skoda factory satnav is in actual line of sight unless you are under 5ft5in tall, instruments are below line of sight. There is a good reason why Audi satnav screens pop up in the centre above the dashboard. Mounting TomTom on a ProClip above an air vent (driver or passenger side depending on size of the actual unit), puts it in the line of view, and does not cost £250 for a potentially malfunctioning piece of hard to upgrade hardware.

I did have an air vent mount at one point in the Fabia but the clips on warm days seemed to warp slightly which made it out fall out of the vent, that experience kind of put me off them :-(

I would like to go the brodit route but as I say their rapid product currently isn't on sale as far as I can tell.

I might try the bean bag thing although I'd need a way to still have the charger connected, the battery life is appalling but isn't an issue when plugged in to the 12v socket.

Has anyone ever tried the telescopic things that attach to the seat brackets?

Ah I see, it's the centre right version (I was selecting RHD on the vehicle selector on their site) that's not available yet for some reason. Odd that.

Wouldn't you just know it, what was showing yesterday as 'under development' is now available. Just need to find a uk supplier that have it in stock now!

OK, I've ordered the pro clip. Now I just need to decide whether the order the mount for my old TomTom or get one for the nexus 7 and buy TomTom for that.

To spend money or less money...!

I find having the phone on the dash distracting as you end up glancing at the screen whenever a call or message comes in. Prefer just avoiding phone usage altogether whilst driving the car these days to be honest as its the safest option.

Agreed, won't be a phone mount. My tablet has no mobile data connection so if I use it it will simply be a massive TomTom :-)

Bluetooth link to the phone in my pocket so I can answer inbound calls (or phone family to tell them to get the kettle on) is more than adequate :-)

Having said that, I'm not really sure what'll happen on the maxi dot when a call comes in while I'm driving, hasn't happened yet!

Not a lot - it's rings and a name pops up on the maxi dot, press phone symbol to answer :)

OK, I've ordered the pro clip.

Did you find a supplier for the RHD version then, if so could you let me know where?

Many thanks.

I ordered it from holdersandmounts.co.uk here

You just have to enter the brodit item number. Mine hasn't turned up yet though, hopefully I'll get it in the next few days.

Many thanks, I'll check them out.

The pro clip has arrived today. Just got to wait for the TomTom holder to go with it to turn up now.

Just got around to fitting this now after borrowing the test teams' Dremel to drill some pilot holes to attach the TomTom holder to the clip. Fitting it in the car took about 20 seconds, easy peasy!
