AC noise

Featured Replies

I have a slight rattle / whistle developing with ac on which goes when ac is turned off. Sounds mechanical, perhaps a fan spinning with a bit of play? Its not loud but I can hear it and its annoying! But should I be worried about the ac system, not the dreaded compressor starting to fail is it?

NB I don't think its the clicking noise I've seen other threads refer to as I tried the reset with no change in sound.

Thanks

Adam

Sounds like mine did, Low on Gas. I had a Radiator fitted under warranty ( the little thin one at the front )

Thanks. Had it regassed last year so hope its not a sign of a leak ..

Yep sounds like low on gas, mine was the same noises like a noisy fan, also had the thin radiator (thinks its the condenser) changed as it was leaking the gas near the dryer. Even though it only took 2 or 3 weeks to lose the gas it took the AC specialist 3 goes with the dyed gas and the UV lamp to locate the leak, 3rd time he put the car in his workshop and turned all the lights off.

Same as mine, I think there was a bad batch, my condenser was leaking down one side, on a bad weld I think.

It was replaced and now working fine.

Was the condenser expensive? Thanks again chaps

Condenser and high pressure switch i just had replaced and the bill was £550. Now the air is so cold i have it set to 19 all the time and even then the mrs complains its too cold

Mine was making a hissing type noise (line an almost empty aerosol can) and it needed a new condenser and seals.

Luckily under warranty.

Ouch.... I see they are £80 on eBay so if this turns out to be my issue I'll be sourcing that and asking my mate to fit it. Thanks

Adam

It's the fitting that's the costly part. System has to be drained parts removed new parts fitted re gassed tested again for leaks etc etc.

Argh let's hope its something else then!! Going to scan it tomorrow and see what crops up first.

So my refrigerant pressure was around 3.2 to 3.4bar. I'm guessing that's a bit low and suggests a lack of gas? This went up to 5-6 when the engine was run for a while, and much higher if I set the gauges to low.

The cooling is still pretty cold although by no means ice cold.

I also noted country code was set to Germany, which is detected by CAN. Doubt its related but not sure why that would be the case!!!

Thanks

Adam

I think mine was 4. Something according to VCDS when I was checking to see if the compressor was working (which it wasn't)

Thanks trundle. Do you mean 4 with the engine off?

That was with a compressor that wasn't compressing. The pressure didn't change with the engine running.

Got you thanks. The compressor doesn't do anything until the engine runs so I guess its similar to the engine being off.

Looks like I might be a little low on gas then as suspected.
