A 205 is the widest tyre that will fit flush under the carpet (on both the MKII and MKIII Superb) anything wider and the carpet will be raised up.

 

I found that on my MKII I had to put the tyre nearest the bumper in first so it went under the plastic boot trim... a PITA if I’m honest so I left the OE 205/55/16” spare in.
