  1. to be honest, i cant give you a techinical answer, as i don't have esp on my current car, feel free to search forums and read up on esp and its function on the mk4 platform, another member posted a link already. the general concencus is esp cannot entirely be turned off without pulling a fuse or disabling the controller, but as thats linked heavily into the abs you then wont have abs. The system does look at the steering angle when on, afaik, when turned off, it uses the abs (under breaking) to detect crash type scenarios (and perhaps the yaw too..who knows!). Either way, its still working on your car when you need it most.
  2. horses for courses really, will put some off and not others!
  3. the button is just a button, with a different label, no actual cost difference. a car with esp has yaw controllers, when it detects slip it intervenes, selecting esp off on your button disables certain elements of the system, but under lets say 'crash conditions' irrespective of what you have pushed ie esp off, you will still have intervention from the esp system. Its a safety feature, and an advanced one at that, and is better than 99.9% of human skill, so vw have designed the system to kick in when really needed.
  4. yes, ho really cares anyway, its all setup on WD, do you think the buyers or the sellers are real? they aren't, i heard the buyers were members of the tv crews family... and anyway, as said, the car got sold as it had a potentail problem, you don't pay top money for a car, that has a gearbox issue (or any issue), unless you are foolish, even if you have a feeling that you might know what it is, you are still taking a risk, so you offer accordingly at worst case scenario. Common sense imo.
  5. nice! ain't nothing pikey about that!
  6. thats expensive for oil from the dealer...52euors...ow!
  7. yes its def a worthwhile addition. it cant be turned off in the car by the button, only the asr function car. Esp like abs works all the time, unless you remove components or uncode it.
  8. dont forget to pm me and remind me if i forget:>
  9. lol, the garage, jock is so obnoxious it makes for fun viewing, he sacked pretty much everyone didnt he?
  10. what the hell, louise never told me she was quitting when i was there in december, man she knows how to strut her stuff!
  11. well everything is worth checking, but if exhaust is chucking out blue smoke, its coming from somewhere and through the engine.
  12. that sucks, ask me where i am going to eat thursday night.....burger bar....OH YEAH....
  13. brewer is just a kn*b, its just all too put on cockney for me, and i cringe when he always puts his hands over cars, or worse still leans/sits on them after ed has painted them. That being said i like the programme still and always watch it. Overhaulin is souless imo, another massive money making machine turning around a car, like west coast customs, course they can do it, look at their budget..its not real life. I much prefer fastnloud, far more gritty restorations, and some awesome stuff comes through their doors, plus its quite funny at times! I think i have seen that guy tim on something else Rob, think it was fifth gear!
  14. i agree, i dont think its piston rings, but stem seal should show on startup? so still think it could be turbo oil seals.
  15. good luck, it will fit in like a dream once removed, just watch your fingers when cutting, as its that tough moulded plastic, and watch the wires surrounding the area, i used a little saw blade on my leatherman, but a small plasterboard saw would work too.
  16. are you still going? am off again next week:>
  17. i think its more than likely the seals not the piston rings, rings would smoke all the time, you can also test compression to check if its these, you should be able to eliminate the rings for sure then. However, if its stem seals, it should do it on startup...is it? if not it could be the turbo seals.
  18. its not gonna blow up the engine, so dont panic, I would go to a proper engine tuner, where they can do it all in house, if you cant take the head off yourself. They can check the car over, see if it is the stem seals, then do the work inhouse. If not you have to go to a mechanic, get them to diagnose it, then remove head, then send it off to who they use, or take it to a specialist of your choice.
  19. bargain, byt he time you pay import duty and shipping on the eurojet item, it will work out at more than that!
  20. well david8, you are an android/cyborg, so perhaps you are drinking it??1ltr every 600 miles, is really not right at all!! can you not see any blue smoke at all? sue you dont have a leak?
  21. ]how much is that from sfs clive? I have bought from eurojet in the past, their first batch of these actually a few years ago...they were terrible, well the parts werent, they were good, but the service was shocking, took like 3 months to get them!
  22. brakes are a must on the 4x4 as they are only 288mm, you can get the vrs stuff which is 312, quite easily. Or go bigger brake setup, like the leone cupra r setup for about 500 secondhand. They are four pot calipers, and are the business! R32 arbs are a good upgrade too.
  23. sorry for a slow response, meant to reply to this earlier...Well vw specify that i think 1ltr of oil in 1000miles is within tollerance....but thats crazy, and no way should burning that much, however from what you say you are not (so thats good). Usual suspects could be turbo oil seals, piston rings, or valve stem seals. Stem seals wear, and the seals arent usually expensive in themselves, its the fact that unless you can remove the head yourself, and do the work, its a bit laborious. Ideally, remove it yourself, give it to a machine shop, get them to check the head and valves, then clean, then get the guides changed, stem seals replaced, 3 angle plus valve cut, and then imo ported and polished as you might as well as the head is off. Meant to say sometimes stem seals can be done in situ, this would be a lot cheaper than taking the head off. But i am old school, and think if there is a problem with the head, i want it all checked!
