  1. Ballymore Coachworks have one for sale (no pics or price on their website), and I saw one in Hamiltonsbawn by the side of the road, which I assume is the same car. Looked ok, pre-FL estate in green. Unless @faker has already bought it...

  3. I'll try to find out about the N-plate, but sure the GAZ one drove off while I was working. I spoke to someone at the N-plate house who confirmed they were different owners, and that he'd be back soon, but I couldn't wait around. I'll have to leave it there unless I want to risk a restraining order. Maybe I'll just turn up next time mine's MOT'd.

  5. Ha. I took the pictures from well hidden vantage points, but yeah, stalker is right. I figured 95 as they stopped making them in 94, and I'd be surprised if they stuck around long enough for 96. I mean they were so highly sought after, they flew out of the forecourts I left my email address and mobile, so I hope they get in touch and save me the bother of another trip up undercover!

Off topic slightly, but locally relevant: Was up in Glengormley today for work, and parked up across the road from some dude with a lovely old caravan in his yard (that's a whole other obsession of mine). Wandered over to see, and he only had a 1995 Favorit Estate in the drive, with the same GAZ plate as mine. Then I looked into his next-door neighbour's front yard and HE HAD ONE TOO!!!!!!! Another Favorit Estate (on an English N plate, so probably mid-late 95 too I'd guess). This second lad had a Mk1 Astra too (well it was a Kadett, but I can't remember which Mk that makes it), which I know will interest @faker too. The first one left in the Fav while I was busy working and I left him a note, and the other one was out, so I left his rather scared looking wife alone. Both cars looked in good nick, considering, although the first less so. The usual bits of crusty arch, but OK. WTF? Have I stumbled upon a cult? That makes 7 that I know of in Ireland... I was thinking of selling up too (to raise funds for another crazy thing), but I've got the bug back... As for meets, I'm not available for a while. GAZ is un-MOTd now, and I'm skint, 'cos we just bought a Sharan to replace our shagged out Zafira. Will get back to it soon enough, unless forced to cash in and sell up, Hope everyone's ok. Jonny

  10. I'm up for Castlewellan. Given that it's 15 mins from home and all. Only issue is that I might have 3 kids in tow. That's not really a problem, but may limit my time/attention. @faker might fancy it too.
  11. Evening All. Many apologies to you all for vanishing. Particularly to Fubar and O2 vRS who sent messages that went unread and unreplied. I've had to batten down the hatches and retreat from society for a range of issues, mostly work and family related. I've also had more than enough ****e off social media, so I left that too. All is well, nothing awful, but I've had no space in my head for anything. GAZ is still with us, and still starts first turn of the key (if it's dry - if not then 5 mins with a hairdryer sorts it). Needs some tlc, especially boots and exhaust, but still going strong. People keep knocking the door to try and buy it: People who seemingly drive about with empty trailers looking for yokes to buy... I wouldn't ever have been able to meet tomorrow, if it's happening. I pointed Liam in the right direction, but he's not on the forum. His Felly passed its MOT, though, so he's still about. I start a new job soon, so may be even more snowed under for a while, but if anything happens in the summer, I might be tempted out. Depends when, as I suspect I won't be as lucky with the MOT this year. Anyway, sorry again for the disappearing act. I'm still not really back in circulation, but will keep half an eye on here if I can. Congratulations to everyone with new babies, new jobs, new cars or any combination of the three :-) Jonny
  12. Well, I changed the themostat and have been using the car daily (55 miles commute in rush hours) for 10 days since. Warms up nicely, then holds an acceptable temperature under all driving conditions, with small fluctuations as the thermostat does its job. No obvious coolant leaks. Job done. Thanks.
  13. Checked coolant this morning and it was within the max/min marks, but closer to minimum. I topped it up to nearer maximum, and the first two short journeys were fine. The last short journey saw the temp gauge climb to similar levels to yesterday. Each time there was plenty of time or the engine to cool fully between journey. I will check again in the morning, but this seems to suggest a coolant leak somewhere. Additionally, I gave the top radiator hose a squeeze to check for coolant returning to the expansion tank, and it seemed fine, but the thermostat made a clunky/rattly sort of sound.
  14. Good morning, Thanks so much for the reply. Covers pretty much everything, as usual. The temp gauge on the dash normally sits at horizontal (or just above) and gets there after 15-20 mins of use from cold. Last night was different; it got beyond its normal very quickly and on the highway. The gauge stayed there for a while, before getting hotter again - almost up to the red section on the dial, (but not into it, or even over the gap before it). I have a suspicion of a dragging brake (although its intermittent and didn't happen last night). It doesn't seem to have lost any coolant, but I haven't checked when cold yet. Engine oil is hard to measure (dipstick is snapped), but I now have another now, so will check that too. I did drive quite heavily at the start of the journey, and have never really booted the car before, but backed off once it started to run hot. There is plenty of heat from the cabin heater, which may rule our the pump - as usual, the heater is either freezing or would melt steel! The radiator fan works, but I have bypassed the sensor, which I have always suspected is malfunctioning, so the fan is just on with the ignition to be safe. The expansion tank opened with a small release of pressure, but not what I would describe as a "lot of pressure". My first suspicion is thermostat failure and that is my first check today. If the thermostat is stuck closed, is it crazy to run without one for a couple of short journeys over the weekend (8 or so miles each)? I know it's not a solution, but I was relying on having transport! Thanks again, Jonathan
