  1. Yes, if I could switch it off. I do 600 miles a week to work and back, it'd be great just to climb into the car and chill while it took me to work. I'd still like to drive the car myself when I wanted to though. As for it not breaking the speed limit? Couldn't care less, I don't boot the car on my commute as it is (uses too much fuel, don't want to risk my licence just to get to work)...

  2. Extra cost of fuel!!!  Diesel is 2p/litre more than petrol so 9p/gallon more.  If he is currently averaging 30mpg in his petrol car then more than 32.3 mpg in a diesel will see him break even.  Any better than that and he is gaining - as he will probably obtain at least 45mpg in a diesel his fuel will cost 5.5p/mile less.  My 2012 vRS CR has averaged a true 45mpg over the last 30K miles.

My commute is mostly motorway, and in my (mapped) PD130, with normal driving, the cruise control set to 70 and the tyres correctly inflated I normally average 60mpg. With all the personal town driving etc. etc. The overall average is currently at 56mpg.

Octy PD130 is the way to go imho; the OP will keep the boot space etc. they're used to though they'll lose the nice seats. If space isn't an issue I'd say get the Fabia vRS.

  3. Consider also the extra cost of the fuel, the potentially higher road tax and also insurance costs before deciding what to do. You may end up with a diesel that average only a fraction more than what you already have, but costs more to fill, tax and insure.....

Why not investigate a car that has had LPG fitted? That was one of the deciding factors for getting the vRS I did - it had a properly installed LPG fitted when it had 9 miles on the clock (now has 155k) - this works out as still averaging 35 mpg on the work commute (mixed roads and stop start town driving) but only costs me a maximum of £25 to fill (55.9p/litre at the moment) - so I only spend about £60 a month on fuel.

It'll only be about a quid more per fillup (1.13 per litre vs 1.11 at my local station). I pay for my tax monthly, it's about £12 per month. I did a comparethemarket the other day and my cheapest quote was £350 (paid monthly), a bit pants considering I paid something like £280 last year, though that was for a single payment.

  4. Personally, I'll use the empty lane. I won't drive right up to the cones and expect to be let in, I'll drive up to around the 400 yard marker, slow down and if the traffic in the other lane is moving in a stop start fashion I'll pop the indicator on, look for a gap appearing and slot in. If the traffic is stationary I'll probably end up stopping and waiting for someone to let me in. I never drive down to the cones because the closer you get to them, the more bullish people get about letting you in. 400 yards seems to be a decent compromise point between making good progress past the traffic, and people still being fairly courteous, in my experience anyway.

  5. Going on the information I have to hand, the standard clutch is capable of handling about 361nm of torque (266ft/lb). However, you need to allow about 10% above the output you are looking for to allow for power spikes, such as dumping the throttle hard. Standard 1.8t vRS is about 235nm, so plenty of reserve.

Is it the same spec for the TDi130 clutch, just out of interest?

  6. So... I'm not quite so sure about whether or not I can let the Croc go to be quite honest, I'm having second thoughts. It's plucky, I like it. It will sit on the drive through winter until I make a decision about its fate but until then I've added another poll to see what people think.

Personally I think you should keep it over the winter, save some cash up in the meantime and see how you feel in the spring. You don't need it to be fast to be fun, just so that it'll carry as much speed as you dare through the corners, that's where the fun is. Use said saved cash on coilovers, RARB, polybush kit and anything else the suspension needs to freshen it up. Uprated brakes next. Then look at upping the power later, as and when the budget allows.

If you decide to get rid then do like I suggested before and get a MX-5 or something, if you're thinking of a vRS you'll end up changing stuff straight away and I can't see the point; you might as well modify what you've got. Unless you're looking at a Fabia vRS.

So basically, save up whatever cash you can over the next 2-3 months and *then* make a decision. At least you'll be doing so with some cash in your pocket.

  7. Yeah I know. :D

But no, I can't afford yours unfortunately Trevor. If I could afford to have your car as a track toy then I would never have got the Croc in the first place ;) Looking for something under a grand definitely.

  8. My Octavia seems to have picked up a slight vibration through the steering wheel. Not enough to visibly shake the wheel, but you can feel it. It only happens when I'm turning left, say, when driving around a sweeping motorway bend, and it is only there when the engine is under load (even slightly, like when I have the cruise control on). It is not there if I'm coasting, or I'm going straight or turning left. Also, it sort of comes in regular half-second on-off pulses, it isn't a constant vibration.

I've had a look under the car and can't see anything obvious, apart from the loose undertray which needs sorting out (clip in the middle keeps popping out). Anyone know what could be the problem, or even where to start looking?

    Thanks

  9. Nothing done to the car, I'm just using it to get to work and back. The undertray needs sorting out, it is loose and makes a buzzing noise when you're driving along. The bit underneath the intercooler is missing which won't help.

I did take to the drag strip at USC though, I was *almost* as quick as a 3.0TDi A7 which made me smile, especially considering I had a passenger. I got beat by a Golf R32 and a stripped-out Clio 182, but I blitzed an Astra :) All good fun
