  1. It will have cheaper to sell the cars hire companies or dealers at a lower price that take a hit on the failure to hit the 22% levy. Some drivers would hopefully get a bit of a bargain in the near future. I know the Meganes have been quite heavily discounted, especially those without heat pumps. Inferior battery technology too put PDQ but a bit crammed. So many good EVs just a few months away but we have to wait for the manufacturers to get round to producing RHD ones after the first batch of LHD ones.
  2. Sales plummeting ? Over a quarter of last month's registrations were EVs in the UK ! In the world largest market over half of sales are EVs. Model Y is still world best selling car is it not ?
  3. Just with road cars EVs are quicker and we see the tech spec of Gen 3 EVO racers first race in Brazil this weekend......... https://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/508043 Key technical enhancements for the new GEN3 Evo race car include: The quickest accelerating FIA single-seater race car – Capable of 0-60mph in 1.82 seconds (0-100kph in 1.86s), 30% faster than a current F1 car. Faster, stronger, more agile – Performance upgrades providing an estimated 2% performance gain from GEN3, equating to a c.2 secs faster qualifying lap on the Monaco circuit, offering world-class racing on any track. Leaner and meaner – An aggressive new body kit designed to be stronger, more robust and more aerodynamic, delivering closer wheel-to-wheel racing. All-wheel drive (AWD) –A first for a Formula E car, available during qualifying duels, race starts, and ATTACK MODE. This feature maximizes acceleration and control, elevating the thrill of critical race moments and intensifying driver rivalries. AWD enhances both performance and strategy, providing more exciting racing for drivers and fans alike. Better grip – Optimised all-weather Hankook iON tires providing 5-10% more grip, made from 35% recycled and sustainable materials (+9% vs GEN3 spec).
  4. Saw this video. I thought all 3 were quite compromised. Real range well under 200 miles and reliability of the SAIC MG quite worrying. Maybe choose the Dolphin, get rid of those shocking Chinese tyres. BYD, oddly, seems tge better of the 3 firms IMO which is sad when Stellantis cover so many European and US brands. My company, CEVA -CMA, are acquiring BYD vehicles and I hope they have done their homework. The Countervailing duty on BYD and MG SAIC is huge in the EU but Al least for now not being applied in the UK but perhaps only a matter of time before they get thousands added to their import taxes. Renault for one might be happier for fairer completion but their Dacia Spring would get wacked as it is Chinese.
  5. I would like to have seen ot up to 14 or 15 £ per hour and Amazon's cross docking station in Coventry up their base wage up to this level after nearly voting to get unionised. But the outcry by employers, CBI etc warning of redundancies of any payrises above inflation. I hope Labour can force through rises of several percent above inflation for each of the 4 years left of their term so we get to that £15 an hour by 2028. Tax allowances rising asap to keep tax recovery down to something tiny. The French had a super deal for 100k of their citizens so so paid could get EVs, like the Dacia Spring for 99 Euros a month, good idea in my opinion. We Brits are suppose to be an innovative bunch but sometimes I wonder if we have lost that facet.
  6. The UK government, of whatever flavour, come up with policy to influence consumers and achieve policies like the EV mandate. The Con governments have implemented the 22% target with penalties and the EV salary sacrifice system to encourage EV take up and Labour have continued the policy in its few months in office. Labour has introduced a fairly large jump in minimum wage and done this when inflation is low which, both apparently the CBI, applaud. UK society was, is and will very for years to come an unfair society. Rules like thr MD of companies like John Lewis would not be paid more than a certain ratio more than their lowest paid worker did no catch on sadly. Companies can do a lot more they they currently do. Providing EV charger cards an not only hydrocarbon ones would be one area as well get a move on with salary sacrifice ev schemes which are available for companies like Octopus. NI rises is to start rebuilding the NHS but it is a long road after a decade and a half of under investment in public health service. When I get offered Private medical through work I refuse it.
  7. We certainly do as employers as employees work out just what a civil/public service pension is worth. We have had employees leave us to go to the civil service, money is the same but even people in their thirties can work out that the public servant pension is so good, worth up to 30% over and above the salary. If men are 20-25 years retired, women 25-30 years retired on average then only a fool would not work out just how to have a whole life comfortable financial life. Of course all of us who pays taxes a portion of that goes to support some public service pay which is paid out of UK current account rather than a fund of billions as it would be for a private sector pension. Of course changing the retirement age from 60 to 65 for most jobs. Also have a bad NHS and other factors has meant average lifespans men and women has not really increased fora decade or more as it was before. To public spend we need to collect it. Oddly we will be collecting quite a bit of pensioners as well as those working with the frozen tax bands. The Gov gives and takes back in the same stroke.
  8. I do not know if these public services use salary sacrifice or they are getting non contributory pension building. In my case with HMRC there was only 1 5% spouse/widows pension to cover the 50% of calculated pension that my spouse would get if I died in service. That, and an other pension contribution, like Aditional Voluntary Contributions, should go under the Salary Sacrifice scheme so more gets in to the pension and public servants have the same rules as private sector workers IMO.
  9. I think this will be more than counterbalanced by millions of place that will have excess electrical power. So if my relatives visit me I will have the two chargers, my own batteries, v2v, solar feed to send them away with topped up batteries in their EVs. The place we, facilitated by Greg Jackson, that having electricity is like filling up a flask with water and electricity units is super cheaper abd no issue to give away to visitors.
  10. In the city environment EVs love shaming ICE car off the light and it does not waste power having a bit of fun whap it up to 30 in about 3 seconds before the ice has even reached max power in first gear. EVs are very efficient round town, even more than an ICE with start stop so one does not even think about conserving except doing the braking with regen. It is in speed range over 60 that one starts thinking about the cubic law of aero drag, unless in a Polestar or model 3 Highland it seems. We are awaiting these Enso tyres and next generation of batteries, investors and lecky motors which will move from 90% to about 95% plus efficiency and a few more kj per kilogram.
  11. 3 phase connection i presume as he talks about three distribution boards. Not sure if that is 400 A each for each phase meaning 1200A at 240v ?
  12. I would be up for that hypermiling challenge. Micheal Schumacher was not only a f1 driver on another level but a brilliant hyper miler.
  13. Might be interesting to have a thread on EVs with a monthly cost of less than £300 a month. My Riviera Zoe was £34k RRP but take off the massive dealer discounts and other financial help, cheapish finance etc and a car with a relatively high RRP can come out with quite low monthly payment. My Zoe is less than £300 a month, I have to pay the servicing,£99, and have bought two front tyres, £130 for a pair so cheapish motoring without a need for public charging with its range.
  14. Some can get 3 phase and that would be great particularly for us Renault etc drivers who can use 22 kw AC 3 phase.
  15. I would hope that drivers want to know what range they might get ie how close to WLTP in Standard Temperature and Pressure and other ambieny Scenarios they might experience. We're the tester Ms driving the cars like an experienced EV driver would ? Probably not I have drive an hour or two and not touch the foot brake. I slow down naturally or using slight, medium or high regen via my paddles. This get me about 10% more range i reckon. That is how an experienced EV driver could and should drive but probably not how your average car tester would. Or worse the Q4 driver may not driver that way but the Explorer driver might and undermine the test as looks might have happened.
  16. God no. In no small part that the USD is the world's reserve currency. Even in trade from Far East to Europe, as well as America, the USD is the currency usually for both freight and goods. New York has been the business capital of the world but this is changing. China will pass US economy size in a few more years.
  17. Yes I was going to this too, good insight i thought. LFP batteries have been a mainly China output but South Korean chaebols LG is to supply Renault etc with 40 kwh LFP traction packs for the rest of this decade. Like the NMC lithium packs they supply for the Alpine 290, R5 performance, Mefane, Scenic etc. Certainly looking at an R4 to replace the Zoe and with its V2G ability, much less deg with LFP it could act a home battery and get me closer to paying almost nothing for lecky at home. I expect the battery from my Scenic, or one of the duff 24 individual cell banks, to go in to a static battery bank in 15 or 20 years time where it would spend another bunch of years until it is so far exceeded by new batteries of 2 or 3 times the energy density and half or third the cost and then it can go for reprocessing in about a quarter of a century or so. Europe needs to get it act together as it has missed the boat so far and is losing the argument that the 21st is the Asian century, 20th being American and 19th being British/European.
  18. Besotted with the massive cash savings (fuel cost usage, servicing and VED) ,not having to go and fill up in carcinogenic petrol stations and knowing I am acting as a decent human being and helping the slow down of climate change.
  19. The idea of Matt Watson is to produce an entertaining video and we will get some indicators, not very scientific, of what this cars are relatively like. I see from one of the video frames that the outside temperature was about 8C and I thought in some of the later shots the roads looked a bit wet. These What Cars drive the EV until they die are quite usefully but not scientific and not even very real world as anybody sensible would slow down a bit if they drive through times when it is rainy. In France you might get nicked for driving at 70s ish in rain when the speed limit drops from 130 kph (81 mph) to 110 kph (68 mph), one should slow down a bit from the national maximum speed when it is raining, the sensible French enforce by law not s the Brits. In Europe from November onwards most citizens go on to winters tyres, 7C being the type manufacturers point where we should be on All Seasons or Winters and not Summer tyres which all the What Car cars presumably all. What car say they topped up all the batteries to 100%. Did they do other important measures like check tyres pressure are right on the morning ? A more valid test would be to say we want you to aim to get to Berwick, say, from Cherwell was it they started, thought it might be South Mimms, and you have to exceed an average of 60 mph ie you can grab a comfort stop but maintain a reasonably expected good average journey speed. My circulation is not great, feet particularly, hands seem not too bad. Scenic first cat in ages I have had with heated steering wheel, a couple of old old Oct L&K might have had it but I have not been in a situation in a place where I would just stick the cabin temp at 20C and felt right about it. I am sometimes lowering it to 19, 19.5C and then up to 20.5 C or up to 21C, especially after a stop. Whilst an interesting video I think the generally reported figure of achieving 80% of WLTP is not true for many EV drivers as they will drive intelligently, even at 8C and wet roads, and they will achieve 90, 95 or even 100% of WLTP range and drive safer and more comfortable rather this interesting but artificial test. Just let the drivers drive within a time window which considers road safety.
  20. Heated seats use almost no energy so better to use than air con especially when temperature outside is 13c or so so not needed. Eco mode can get the last n'th of energy so I will have on for a bit but oft use the steering wheel mode selector to flip in to comfort and even sport mode for a few seconds or minutes. I find i can reach by destination in a few percent left whether i am travelling 80, 80, 100 or 110% of WLTP range. Just manage the speed and then can hardly ever need to public charge. Much cheapness if charging but lots of claiming at the Treasury mileage rate. Could gave made life easier with tge version that a hundred miles more range but quite stimulating playing the hit the optimum cruising to get home with a margin I am happy with ie about 5% showing.
  21. Whilst my average might only be about 60 mph i find myself doing 70 plus down the hills with the Scenic this is with the regen in the lowest ie freewheel setting. Up the hills conscious to perhaps get some aero draft and keep the miles per kilowatt over 4. I look at it timeout to stop and charge, just for ten minutes and think if I just slow down by 5 mph will not need to stop. Just did Worcester to Yeovil to Taunton and then back to Worcester. Was about 240 miles and managed my speed on the motorway so I arrived home with 5% battery. Will charge tonight to bring it back up to 65% battery and 175 miles of range at a princely cost of £3. Still waiting to hear if Octopus have stuck with 8.5p per kwh despite the day rates rising.
  22. Also missing 2024 Car of the year Scenic with its 370 mile WLTP, more like 330 real at 70 ish.
  23. Except the Polestars which seem to do the best in recent tests. New model 3 Highland LR version quite impressive. SUV shaped vehicles really suffer at 70 ish, better at around 60.
  24. Quite a pokey motor it sounds like with 0 to 60 in 8 seconds. Quicker than my Scenic. Perhaps going more against the MINI rather than the 5 and other mainstream B segment EVs. Ford need it to succeed but it has to be doubtful. 3 years to bring to market is too slow compared to most of its competition.
  25. Do not know where you get your info but EVs will typically last between twice to three times longer/miles than an ICE vehicle.
