  1. Hi all,

My Polo GTI is now 6 years old with just over 35k on the clock and with some cars 6 years is about the time you would consider changing the cambelt.

After doing some searching on both the VW website, briskoda, google, etc, I am a bit confused as to whether or not the car has a cambelt or chain?

If I put my reg into the VW service booking page it offers me a price for a cambelt change:

But most other places say it has a timing change which doesn't need replacing. Can someone shed some light on this as you would think VW would be correct?

    Was asked to post.

Just got mine back after having an engine replacement under warranty, mines a 61 plate CAVE on 40500ish miles and it's had a CTHE short unit fitted to hopefully fix its thirst for oil, one the highest my particular dealer has seen. Now not sure wether to keep and extend the warranty or offload and hope the grass is greener.

Sorry if I have missed the post but did you have the "fixes" done aswell prior to the engine change?

  3. The sad thing is if this whole diesel tax does come into affect or they have some sort of ban is the old vehicles will be taken of the road. Hopefully they will change there mind.

After reading some of the posts, I understand that the diesel VRS may not be the best choice but after doing a search on auto trader, the closest TSI model to me is over 98 miles away, slighlty cheaper and doesn't have the same kit. Too many people bought the diesel model :D

Not been on this site for a while. Got a 63 plate Fabia VRS but will be letting it go soon. Good news is the engine now doesn't use any oil between annual services. This is my 5th engine.

However the cabin stinks of petrol all the time and having had it in twice with no joy  I'm finally getting rid. Up and down 5 years 2 cars and 5 engines but enough is enough. Had some fun, getting an ordinary 1.2 Monte Carlo and hope this is easier to live with.

    5 engines! :o

Was that all because of oil usage?

  5. Hi all,

I currently own a Polo GTI 1.4 TSI and was thinking of getting at some point a Octavia VRS. One of the things that is holidng me back is my knowledge of the VW TSI and TFSI engines and how prone they are to oil consumption issues.

Unfortunatley my Polo was one of the oil users but I managed to get the "fixes" done through warranty and so far so good it has been ok (touch wood). However I fancy a change but if I was going to change to a VRS should I avoid it or is the problem not as common?

The one I am looking at is this:

    http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201705255806029?make=SKODA&fuel-type=Petrol&advertising-location=at_cars&radius=30&onesearchad=Used&aggregatedTrim=vRS&postcode=bs164pd&sort=distance&model=OCTAVIA&page=1

I would consider a diesel VRS but as I do very little mileage around town and don't use my car for work I would probably end up killing the DPF and/or injectors.

    Is it worth the swap?

Be very careful deviating from manufacturer spec for oil, it can be disastrous in some cases (I know from experience, a £4K experience that is).

Agreeded, however the oil I used is within manufacture specification (see approvals and recommendations): https://products.liqui-moly.com/top-tec-4200-5w-30-6.html

As long as it meets one of the VW 50X 0X numbers in the handbook then it should be fine. VW recommend Castrol normally as a brand which to these engines is like water down a plug hole :D

I just thought I would add to this thread as a few weeks ago I reported my high oil consumption to my local dealer (rainworth Skoda)

It has undergone the consumption test and late last week it was confirmed my car exceeded tolerance and they were speaking to Skoda uk as to the next step. Roll on this afternoon and a call to book the car in on the 30th. They are doing the crank case oil breather mod, oil spray jets and ecu update.

Im happy they are going to do both, best chance of a fix by the looks of it. Hopefully this will be the end of my issues and no more oil all over the back of the car!!

Good to hear. At your next oil change it might be worth puting some oil additives in just to clean through the system and invest in some decent oil. Been using Liqui Moly 5w30 Top Tec 4200 and hasn't used a drop in the last 1000 miles, however there are many other great oils out there as well which Awayoffski can recommend.

has anyone tried shell helix on a twin charger ?

I have tried it in mine. You can get some good deals on it at opie oils:

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68976-shell-helix-ultra-5w-40-pure-plus-fully-synthetic-engine-oil-recommended-by-ferrari.aspx

Get a 1 litre plus a free pouch for the boot.

It wasn't a bad oil, it just didn't seem to make that much of a difference in terms of consumption.

One oil I am trying at the moment is this:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Liqui-Moly-8973-Top-Tec-4200-5W30-Engine-Oil-5-Litre-/262913691862?hash=item3d36e090d6:g:TZkAAOSwmgJY2nPe

Aparently it is very popular in Germany at the moment along and I have read that it is known to reduce consumption better than most oils. I have done around 600 miles since my service and no drop so far. I am no oil expert but I have noticed it has improve the performance slightly on my GTI and it seems to run smoother.

  9. My GTI had the same issue and i didnt have a problem with the warranty company (warranty wise). Managed to get it done through my local VW. It might be worth contacting the warranty supplier and ask them how much freedom you have in regards to where you take the car. If not then go through honda and they might send it to Skoda anyway.
