Rear Brakes
Just as an fyi … for anyone else - the key steps. Not the only way, but worked for me. I used 3 special tools 7mm Allen key socket 14mm XZN triple square socket OBDII Code Reader Connect up battery charger to battery (important step) Release EPB Retract EPB with code reader Jack car wheel up high (wheel about 10” off floor) Remove wheel Remove plastic end plugs from Calliper pins Unscrew & Calliper pins Push piston back fully by levering with a screwdriver between pads & disc. (No need for a retractor tool … simply push fully back) Lift off calliper and temporary tie up with cable tie to avoid straining brake line. Remove brake shoes Remove the 2 x Calliper fixing bolts ( technically they are screws) this was hardest part, I applied heat with a micro gas burner to heat up heads, in the hope it softened thread lock. Take out the Torx screw that holds on disc. Screw in 1 x wheel screw … to avoid disc dropping out when it becomes free I applied dismantling fluid around where disc fits on central hub … then some suitable wallops with a hammer to remove I cleaned area up with brake cleaner, removed any corrosion on hub face, and applied very thin coating of ceramic grease (used a brush to ensure very thin), also applied to ‘ears’’ on new brake pads, and the rear of pad where piston makes contact. Also sprayed rubber boot of piston with silicone spray. Cleaned new disc faces with brake cleaner … and fitted When fitting new Calliper frame bolts, I added Blue thread lock to the first 25mm. Redid all screws to correct torque. Release EPB with code reader Light short strokes on foot brake to reset pads. road test. check code reader for any alarms.

Rear Brakes
Here is a pic of old pads alongside new ones … I would say their description was fair. As at 35,000 miles there was about 3mm undercut where pads make contacts to discs.

Rear Brakes
OK ... finally weather allowed me to do this job .... Had a loan of a code reader so retracted the EPB fine. Armed with M7 allen socket, calliper pins came out OK, calliper removed and old pads out .... Then the failure .... the M12 'Triple square XZN' bolts .. I bought a set of 'Triple square XZN' sockets: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B086WKD65Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but the M12 is simply far too loose .... fully inserted you can give almost a 1/4 turn, only tips seem to be engagging, it will round out the bolts. The set comes with M12 standard and a M12 long reach - and both the same ... far too loose. This video shows how loose ... and as posters have said these are fitted with high torque they would round out https://youtu.be/bnIePKdD4-k That is a brand new bolt - all 4 are the same. This is even on the replacement 'new' bolts ...... so it looks like they are not M12 sockets... even though the thread measures as M12. Reassembled for today .... may take bolts to a tools shop tomorrow to see if they have something that fits it ...... but the 2 x new M12 sockets I have are certainly too loose a fit. Does anybody know if this is a 'VAG' specific tool ?

Q on performing own service
Have checked .... 3yr service was carried out (& MOT) and at same time they did brake fluid change. So having also had Haldex service, and Air-con service ...... when I change oil & filter, and a look over elsewhere should be fine until next service. Glad you asked - made me check out brake fluid.

Q on performing own service
I have full servicing done by dealer - just as I had full annual service, and since then only a few thousand miles decide to do oil service my self. As I'm changing pads & discs, and it had a Haldes & Air Con service 2 weeks ago, and new wipers in Sept ....... I keep regular eye on tyres ..... should be good with OIl & Filter change then. Thanks you for your comments.

Oil Filter location
Thanks …. Realised after my reply that it was in kW so it is from underneath and have to moves pipes and cables out of the way. They state. ‘Remove insulation’ … no details on that, is that the almost full width plastic panel under the engine?
-
Oil Filter location
not the 190 p.s. Diesel engine though (unfortunately)
-
Oil Filter location
Not tried to find it yet, but is Oil filter accessible from top of the engine, 190ps Diesel. Or is like some VAZg engines only available from underneath, requiring some cables to be moved for access.

Q on performing own service
It does give ACEA C3 compliance as one option so I bought the Shell Helix Ultra

Q on performing own service

Q on performing own service
OK as posted above have reset oil service due message .... I'll do my own oil service, couple of questions for the knowledgeable guys # Is it just change oil & filter, anything else due in 'Oil Service' # Q on the oil .... a. Went to owners book, you would think Oil capacity would be stated ... nope, all it says is top up in 0.5L increments - anybody know the capacity .... it's the 190 Diesel b. For oil spec I was expecting something simple like use "Fully Synthetic 5W40" Instead it says VW507 00, ACEA C3, API CJ-4 So my initial searches do find an ACEA C3 compliant at Euro Parts the following seem to suit (unless anyone knows different) TRIPLE QX Fully Syn Engine Oil 5W-30 C3 Shell Helix Ultra Professional AG Engine Oil - 5W-30

OK That worked - just reset so I'll plan on doing Oil Service.

Disappointed in off road performance
That is the issue though ..... 'left to its own devices' ...... but you don't know if it is working (or failed)
-
Disappointed in off road performance
This agrees with what I posted earlier - that there is no 'Haldex Service due alarm' .. no any alarm when Haldex is not working properly or totally failed .... you would expect 'pump failure alarm. or 'low oil pressure' or something that shows it should have kicked-in but didn't.

Q on performing own service
Anybody happen to have details of what is in a standard oil service ? Is it just change oil & filter ?
-
Disappointed in off road performance
Mine had its 3 yr service in July .... and is just under 30,000 miles now
-
Q on performing own service
Thanks .. I’ll try that … if it works I’ll then do oil service myself.
-
Disappointed in off road performance
Agree .. when asked I was told there is a recommendation the oil changed at 30,000 miles, but as they did not mention this when it was in for annual service I was unaware. It had also been marked on their system as 'deferred' .... but they were unable to say who had set that. Yes strange no service message that its due .... other service items do 'pop up'

Q on performing own service
My cars have been changed at 3 yr point (or less) so for last 8 or so cars been serviced under warranty & service packs. As car has done so few miles, I purchased it at end of PCP deal .............. the 'Oil service due in 27 days' message come up. I'm more than capable for doing an oil service ..... but if I do this myself, how do I reset my car to clear alarm, and can I update my service record on-line or ask dealer to do so ?
-
Disappointed in off road performance
I thought that once you put in 'Off Rd Mode' it would show some form of 'power to rear wheel indication' I'm not aware of anything .... perhaps someone here knows different. The reverse of that is that there was no alarm or error to warn that Haldex was not working ... plus no 'service due' message or similar, I asked about this and was advised that Haldex service is just an option not carried out as part of normal service schedules.

Disappointed in off road performance
That ramp is not an option to use for this .... I do agree it would be nice to prove ..... the problem is anytime the car moves out I don't know if back wheels are driving or following. Have to think it through.
