  1. At the risk of repeating what's probably been reported elsewhere, I thought I'd report on today's experience. The car is a 2016 1.6 diesel estate DSG with Stop-Start, so needs a big battery. Almost 86,000 miles on the clock, owned for nearly 6 years. The Stop-Start had been erratic for a few days but I had put that down to the cold weather. This morning, in Snowdonia, it was -2°C. The car was covered in ice and the doors were almost frozen shut. The engine turned over a couple times and failed to start. A few minutes later, it didn't turn over at all with warnings on the dash. I went inside at this point as it was bluddy cold. I was considering calling the AA for a jump lead start, but decided to try once more first. After 2 or 3 slow turns, the engine started. Phew! But clearly the battery was on the way out after well over 6 years. I drove some 30 miles to ATS Bangor for a battery check and likely replacement. En route, I noticed the Stop-Start was inactive, the cruise control wasn't working with an error warning on the dash. The Bluetooth was also disabled and there was a warning about the tyre pressure monitor being inactive. It seems these secondary services are shut off when the battery is failing to reduce demand on the battery. The battery test showed that the capacity was down by 50% and was only able to put out less than half the maximum cranking power. The new battery was supplied and fitted, the old one taken for recycling. It was completed in about 45 minutes at a cost of - gulp! - £190! We had a 90 miles journey home, mostly along the A55 expressway and motorway at 60+ mph, so a good run to charge the new battery. All seems well now
  2. I upgraded to the full European map because it seemed the easiest was to have the UK, Ireland, the IoM, Channel Islands, France, Andorra, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium on a single card. Yup, we get around!
  3. The full European map is around 15.8Gb. This won't fit on a 16Gb card of around 14.9Gb.
  4. Many thanks - much appreciated. As usual, not at home, so will download and install in a couple of days.
  5. Seems fine over a 60 mile route. Reselected the speed cameras. Many thanks again.
  6. It took a long time "Checking Navigation Data" but it loaded and "Home" is showing correctly. I'll be testing it live later today. Many thanks. 👍🏻
  7. I've arrived home! I've d/l'ed the files from theVW portal: https://navigation-maps.volkswagen.com/vw-maps/DiscoverMedia2_EU-AS_2010_V17.7z and have expanded the compressed file without issue. However, when I compare the files with the old SD Card, there appears to be a file missing - an identification file? - something like 1910_MP213-1247.x_EU-AS.mds. Is this essential, and where do I find it if it is needed? Many thanks.
  8. Thank you When I get home next week, I try that.
  9. This is what I downloaded. I'm not at my PC so can't examine the files more closely.
  10. Many thanks. All is now well having used the map downloaded from the Skoda update site.
  11. Maybe I did something wrong but the VW download wasn't recognised by my Amundsen.
  12. Sorry but the Skoda link doesn't work. I used: https://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/en-GB/Updates/ Cheers. John.
  13. I have a DSG 1.6 diesel estate. Gearbox is seamless - recommended!
  14. Thanks for the descriptions and info. The trickiest bit was undoing the two retaining screws. They were very tight and I too was worried about chewing them up. Fortunately I had a quality Torx bit for my cordless drill and in the end they came out cleanly. Otherwise the job was straightforward and dashboard nag has been neutralised. Many thanks.
  15. Many thanks to all for this thread. I had the Oil Service warning come on around 9,000 miles after the last major annual service. I phoned the local independent VAG/Škoda garage to arrange an oil change. They asked when the last service was carried out and how many miles ago. They then said to ignore it and check an owners' website on how to reset the nag! They said the main dealer would have used synthetic oil which is good for 30,000km/18,000miles. So the nag is switched off and I'll go there instead of the main dealer for the next service (which could include new brake discs and pads. 🙁 )
  16. Seems very odd. Try clearing all your personalisations - one may be rogue.
  17. My last car had an electronic speed limiter. As you say, it takes time to get used to, but I found it extremely useful. I reckon it reduced fuel consumption too as the car would not unnecessarily speed up as it would on cruise control. Flooring the accelerator over-rode the limiter. The Octavia's speed limiter is just an audible warning.
  18. Hope not. I have a 1.6 81kW diesel with a DSG gearbox. Emissions are given as 99g/km.
  19. Hence my proviso about trip computers. It shows ~55mpg but I suspect it errs on the generous side. The speedo (and probably the odo as well) over reads by about 5% as well. I expect you're correct that the low fuel warning comes on with 10+ litres remaining. It was about 6 in the Citroën, so time to fill up with another 60 litres.
  20. I rarely get 500 miles from the tank. Low fuel warnings start at about 430. My driving frequently includes 200 mile round trips. It means refuelling after two trips. I find it annoying. My previous car (Citroen) had a range of over 650 miles with a 65 litre tank and produced a similar mpg if trip computers are to be believed.
  21. Forgot to add the road tax for the 1.6 diesel £0.00. Nice.
  22. I dislike the small fuel tank (50 litres? should be 75) and the always-on 12 volt socket. The boot (estate) is huge, the car is quiet, the DSG box virtually unobtrusive, the auto A/C very good, and if the trip computer is to believed, the mpg is excellent. 2016 model.
  23. I've checked and it seems to be genuine Skoda and 32Gb (well, 29Gb in reality) The maps supplied are the latest, 2021/22. It shows the Caernarfon by-pass which is still under construction. Conclusion: good buy!
