Hello,
Been lurking about here for a while and wondering can anyone help with the audio in my car.
I have tdi mk1 octavia estate (20 years old in March) and appreciate the best answer is probably: buy a new car; but it won't die and I'm loathe to get rid of it.
Anyway...
Audio is currently completely stock. Speaker in the passanger door has died. It crunches when I push the cone suggesting the voice coil has gone and I need to set the bass to -2 so it doesn't distort.
I can find s/h replacements on ebay for pennies but I'm curious what I could do by way of upgrades, any second hand driver is gonig to be at least 16 years old by now and will probably fail soon, I think my other, in the driver door, is on the way out too, it distorst at moderately high volume.
I have the following bits lying aroung and on the way:
2 unused old sony xplod coaxial 6x9s (probably useless, can't see how i could fit them)
New head unit, 4x50W: one of theses I found for sale locally
one of these Magnat rock 6000 amps that I stumbled across on an auction site for very little money (4 x 85/200W RMS/peak)
I've read this: https://uk-mkivs.net/topic/14927-how-and-why-to-change-your-mk4s-speakers-updated-10809/
Which gives the impression that the best thing to do would be to put in the new head unit and replace the speakers like for like.
But that seems a bit boring
Thread here suggests good results from an amp: https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/480242-custom-fitstealth-audio-upgrade/
So a few questions:
Any point replacing the door speakers with anything other than stock?
Anything I can do with the 6x9s?
Is it worthwhile amping the new head unit?
Is it worthwhile damping the doors?
Any left of field ideas?
A random idea I had was to get a hold of those slim BMW floor subs (like these) and stick them in the boot. I have a levelling kit which gives a false floor and kind of useless space underneath. I don't want a big sub box. Thought I could send some bass there instead of the front
I do a fair bit of electrical work and a bit of tube amp work so I'm happy with the technical parts of this
Cheers!
