Thank you. Good idea. I could also remove some of the insulation from said mains cable š¤«, but that could involve me in a different kind of charge! A post I saw recently suggested wrapping insulating tape around bits of the cable, simulating multiple repairs: makes the charger look like itās in a bad wayā¦

Thank you. The unit looks very robust and I realise that it is pretty much waterproof. I just felt that leaving the car on my drive all night with the bonnet open would be too much temptation for some!

Just an update. I have bought a Ring smart battery charger, direct from Ring. It is the latest 2024 version, 6 amp. (Model 906). Works well. Took around 12 hours. Glad I did not get the 4 amp, although if you have the luxury of a garage it could be that using 4 amps, all night, is better for the battery. My Scala now has a fully charged 4 year-old battery. Sadly the start-stop is working again š„², but you canāt have it all!

Many thanks. The RSC range still looks good value for occasional use, and they never claim to āwake the deadā. The 800 series is now looking a bit ancient - there is a new trendy 900 seriesā¦

Finally managed to ease the two main clips holding the start-stop "gubbins" to the top of the battery (Just as Alf Ford did the other day) and glimpsed underneath. Behold, it is 59Ah 320 amps EFB (ie it is probably the factory-fitted battery), which presumably was why contrarian Alf was so adamant it was AGM. Obviously his real name is not Alf, but when you know, you know! Thanks again everyone. As someone posted on here in this topic, don't believe it until you have seen it!

Thanks for all the help. I may well get the RSC804. Another thing I have just noticed: my Scala alternator (smart-ish?) always, at least in winter, charges at 14.8v, which I assume is right for the battery, if it was coded correctly. 14.8v is also the winter setting for the RSC804, and probably many others.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting the Roco Genius 5 charger, which is highly recommended. It clearly has to be told if the battery is AGM. The instructions say that the AGM setting charges to a higher voltage. The standard 12v setting includes EFL, which I guess means that the AGM setting could overcook an EFL battery. Regarding charging at -4 degrees, I guess weāve all been there: there is a lot of info around suggesting it is a bad thing to do, but so is having to get to work without the car!

Thank you so very much. As it happens, the Halfords guy managed to flip off the stuff mounted on the top, primarily āto test the batteryā and then clipped it down. He was 100% about it being AGM. So I shall proceed with caution! Fortunately the best charger seems to be a 60 mile trip this week, which temporarily activated the Start-Stop ā¹ļø. Always possible that the previous owner fitted AGM. From what I understand, Halfords just change like for like, and code in a new battery serial number. Thanks again.

I am thinking of using a decent smart charger on my 1.5 Scala, so I would like to know whether the (start stop) battery is EFL or AGM. The Halfords guy says AGM, so I tend to the opposite view! MY 2020. Maybe somebody knows? Unfortunately the battery label is totally obscured by the wiring clipped to the top. Does anyone know how to safely remove it? I have sausage fingers and donāt want to break anything!

Start and stop disable permanently
Which is why I am reluctant to change my 4 year-old Scala battery. The car is smart enough to turn off SS (permanently?) if the battery is old! I have also read that there is also a brute force procedure involving disconnecting the battery sensor wire, at the battery, if you are desperate!

Loading user profile issue AGAIN
AFAIK There is not much personal info, itās more about detecting who is driving and setting preferences of temperature etc. Fine if you have a high spec Superbe, etc and have the seats adjusting automatically. For the likes of me, it is pointless. Your profile name can be anonymous. You can be greeted with ā Hi Batmanā if that floats your boat. i have never understood the way the key profile, user profile, app etc all work with each other. Too much froth and not enough beer⦠You can easily delete your preferences and private info before selling the car.

You have my sympathy. I had exactly the same on my Scala. Replacing the ācontrol unitā under warranty seemed to work for a week or so, then the problem returned (during that time my spare key no longer worked because the dealer did not recode it). I had a fight to get them to fully update the software, which I believe was the original and therefore around 3 years old. The previous owner probably just put up with the problem during Covid, then sold the car. The new software has fixed the problem for me, but as I am the only driver and the car has few ābells and whistlesā I have no user set. Maybe that the new software realises there is no primary user and therefore doesnāt wait for a non-existent profile. It works for me. check independently that you have the latest software, and try with and without a primary user. Good luck!

Thanks. Another tip is to get a usb stick with a led on it which flashes when data is moving. Mine would flash for about 30 secs on startup, but then NADA. As I mentioned, I now pay for the online updates (£44 pa) and it works well, incl roadworks etc. Regarding drive letters, I got the s/w updated by the dealer to 0278 in the summer, but still the usb drive letters do not appear when they should. if you do much driving, try the 1 month free trial online. Less than £1/week is not bad value.

This problem returned intermittently until I got the software fully updated, July 2023 under warranty. I believe mine was the original 2020 version, which really was not up to the job. Now fixed.- Mib3 map update
I believe mine was triggered by the free one month on-line trial, although the usb was already in place. I have been impressed by the up-to-date info on road works, closures, queues etc. Remember though that the maps will NEVER be fully up-to-date. As the USAF manual used to say āBelieve the maps. If there is a discrepancy between the map and the terrain, believe the terrainā. Enough said.- Mib3 map update

Hi. For my Å koda Scala 2023, Amundsen MIB3, I have the following info directly from Skoda this week. āThe map information only loads for the area you are driving in, when you are driving. The vehicle does not actually retain the information, and the information loaded is not a map of the country or continentā. I think this applies to online updates or usb offline. It takes awhile to get your head round it, but basically it allows for you to see the latest maps you need, without downloading all the lot. The Skoda shop is offering a one month trial of the online update for free. It also includes the latest roadworks, and gives you speed limit warnings. It is well worth a free trial. You may become addicted! It works for me.- roadside assist button
Somehow my personal primary user had defaulted to Germany! You canāt change it: need to delete and start again!- "Loading User Profile"
See my reply (Skotastic). Basically, when it eventually lets you in, find the ārestore factory settingsā. This will clear everything, and your problem will be gone. How much do you need a profile? At least this solution gives you back your infotainment.- Loading user profile issue AGAIN
My Scala has suffered with the āloading user profileā intermittently for ages. Tried deleting my āuserā, but as with all bad software, the problem got worse (I guess it was still looking for a non-existent profile!). When it let me, I reset to factory settings and now all is well. I suggest that unless you really need a profile, you do the same and all profiles will be gone. At least you get your Amundsen infotainment back, even if you need to add your settings again. You can always let your dealer meddle at the next service⦠- Loading user profile issue AGAIN
