12V Socket seems to have gone permanently live !?!?
Hi Everyone, Has anyone got any knowledge or experience of the 12v socket in the front of their vehicle becoming permanently live when it previously didn't appear to be? I have a dash cam which I plug into the 12v socket, and for the first couple of months of having the car, it turned off when I parked up and removed the ignition key - suggesting that the socket was on an ignition live rather than permanent live. I checked the settings on the dash cam and it is set up to turn off after 1 minute of turning off ignition. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Is it something that can be changed on the VCDS for instance? Thanks in anticipation of your assistance.

My Columbus has changed into German
Sorry to hear that the update didn't work for you mate - another member on here is kindly going to have a look at an update for me, but if it doesn't work I will be looking at replacing the unit too. Out of curiosity, what do the letters (E and K) signify, are they just what features they have, such as DAB, TV etc, and how would you know if your vehicle has the connections and ancillary equipment to support them please?

My Columbus has changed into German
Hi @varooom If it were guaranteed to fix the problem I would definitely pop over to see you buddy, but a lot of people are suggesting a motherboard issue which can only be fixed with a replacement board, so it might be as well replacing the unit. Out of interest, which district of West Yorkshire are you in?

@varooomI don't have the facility to burn a disc mate unfortunately . . . . . I really appreciate you trying to help me, but it looks like it might have to be a unit swap out job I think.

My Columbus has changed into German
Hello Jonnyhatesjazz70, Did you buy an SWL Disc and install it mate? If so how did it go? Any issues or difficulties? I am experiencing issues with my Columbus unit changing the display to German too, but I am very nervous about doing a DIY update of the firmware in case I mess up the cars software somehow. It would be reassuring to know if anyone has done this and know what their experiences were. Cheers

My Columbus has changed into German
Hello guys, I have experienced a similar issue - my screen information display has partially changed to German in all functions, radio, media, nav, parking sensor display, however, I still have full functionality and sound. Doing a DIY update of the Firmware seems a scary proposition in case it corrupts anything. If I were to take this to a dealer or V.A.G. ICE Specialist, does anyone know what kind of cost would I be looking at for an official (warranted) update please? Thank you.

Language on Columbus randomly changed to German
Can anyone offer any advice please? The language on my Columbus stereo somehow automatically changed to German, so I entered the set up menu and tried to change it back to English. The message in the image came up on the screen, and couldn’t be cleared, preventing me from using any touch screen functions. It apparently means “the language you have selected is being uploaded” but I was told I need an internet connection to complete the installation. I turned the car off, left it a while, then turned it on again and the message had cleared but the language on the screen was still in German. A helpful chap on Facebook suggested that I do a soft reset and sent me a link to a YouTube video which I followed and whilst it did reset the unit, the language is still German. Any advice and suggested solutions would be very welcome - cheers

Replacing VERY noisy 18" Firestone tyres
Cheers John. Might prove less expensive to get some decent second hand 16" / 17" wheels with decent tyres on than replace the rubber on the 18" rims for these high end tyres . . . . . Much to consider. Thanks for the guidance mate

Replacing VERY noisy 18" Firestone tyres
Just to check that I am looking at the right kinds of things if I was considering 16" wheels with 55 wall tyres, would either of these be suitable to be fitted to my car please? 16" rim 5 x 112 No info on centre bore diameter or offset ?!?!?! Is it safe to assume that if the rim width and the stud diameter are correct that the ET will be suitable, or is there more to it than that? From information and links that I was kindly provided with in the other conversation in the wheels forum, it seemed that the ET varied with width and diameter as a ratio, but I'm still not certain how this works. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265881626043?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D241917%26meid%3D39a2c4311def4be9b8f77d8f67bec54a%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D265872809553%26itm%3D265881626043%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv11WebTrimmedV3MskuWithRevOptLambda90KnnRecallV1&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851&amdata=cksum%3A26588162604339a2c4311def4be9b8f77d8f67bec54a|enc%3AAQAHAAABEPZqctS1aW2Gn1fMafrLrPa7%2BqLD2Pgo5GTgCDTJgIpBMBHaBHcFvdVGNBWeIytK8U7x8RargP9Bv5VZgW5ZIFP1ukK7sBpt3VhMN9lKcJv58rifkCbp1qK4kKhZ7QVAqrjY4Z%2FygimvCoVXKHovqm9lNfok5PuTlVaq274s15znkZAkTOuxQ624qvbcN5mNEPo0fRsSpmtMj3RRloQ%2FqRYynAe%2FYCdiUtTvcE4TPqEkCA%2BO34WQm4sq7I3iBacMXanjvj3AfEWV8pBuaUxepV%2FoWKdyC2J1OAVbcCBaFG9FAC%2BjyZjtBz7WZ4pX8UcM0idsn3%2BH9KcgePIY5V6Bx0ks5%2F7viVHLi%2Bu3W6vVTlNV|ampid%3APL_CLK|clp%3A2047675 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265872809553?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110010%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.DISCCARDS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200818141627%26meid%3Ddaf268535828486a8a6b51bd23a0dcaa%26pid%3D101110%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D134221665000%26itm%3D265872809553%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2563228%26algv%3Ddefault&_trksid=p2563228.c101110.m1982&amdata=cksum%3A265872809553daf268535828486a8a6b51bd23a0dcaa|enc%3AAQAHAAAA4C9MqZj5rvev%2FtpGrc%2FLsyOjod9AGtityX7W%2Bq07KgZMsnrXiJjZG8ZVvSjYeb6YEnUBWmEPX4%2BxaancHDQiN3SyJHZWU5RviDGLQxcGnVQEO44PlHc%2FmHViGbtJzwPjOPfVdWORQrpRWqSPuLeTU4TzEIg%2FmQi93%2BzADsmMIlvC7a4aK66SYJxqG2AJuR5qV3tV9jFgpZPP3wTkU0WXGbGZsDzRbjhb7zs%2BFJBpmOhECI%2BvaRZoY%2BqRHux75ueJDisKEaj6ehifmutAu%2BUTV4mOy%2FpmPsAYAdtSzh4KA9V7|ampid%3APL_CLK|clp%3A2563228

Replacing VERY noisy 18" Firestone tyres
https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1=225-40-18X7.5ET46&wheel2=205-55-16X6ET45&fcl=50mm&scl=50mm&wcl=30mm&sr=0mm This is what I was looking at. The link to the site was kindly provided to me by another member and I inputted the parameters for existing and replacement wheels. The image on the right shows the wheel extremely close to the calliper on a 16" wheel with an ET45 offset on the wheel.

Replacing VERY noisy 18" Firestone tyres
Thanks for the suggestions @Carlston from looking on some of the "will they fit" type websites suggested by other members, I have more or less established that 16" would be very close to not fitting over the brake discs and calipers . . . . With this particular post, I am looking to see if any members are running different rubber on 18" rims and have found them to be markedly quieter.

Replacing VERY noisy 18" Firestone tyres
Good Afternoon everyone, I started a new post in the Wheels Zone forum, asking about things to consider if I were to reduce my wheels from 18" to 17", because I am having real issues with road noise on the tyres that I currently have on the Superb MkII estate 4x4 which I recently bought - see below if you would like to look through that conversation. It became apparent that swapping wheels out was far from a straightforward issue, and could prove costly, with no guarantee of any improvement, so as a starting point it was suggested that I see if swapping tyres might offer an improvement. I currently have Firestone Firehawk SZ90s 225/40/R18 on all 4 "Luna" wheels, and to say they are incredibly noisy would be an understatement, they are borderline unbearable, by far the noisiest tyre I have experienced on any vehicle I have owned or driven in 33 years of motoring. Has anyone else with a Superb estate running on 225/40/18 tyres has swapped out their tyres, and found them to be markedly less noisy? Any suggestions would be very welcome - thank you.

Reducing wheel size?
Cheers @SurreyJohn Do you have any experience of navigating these overseas Skoda websites mate? How might I find out information about what wheels were fitted to say ROI Superbs in 2011/2012? Mine was built in August 2011 which apparently is right on the cusp of the change from "B" to "C" in the fitment categories . . . . I think the sensible thing to do initially is post in the Tyres forum and see if other Superb owners have changed their 18" tyres to a brand which offers much quieter road noise, then take things from there. Thanks again everyone for your patient and detailed explanations, recommendations and guidance, I genuinely appreciate it.

Reducing wheel size?
Herein lies the crux of the problem Roottoot. I have googled reviews for the Firestone Firehawk SZ90 and many of the reviewers complain about "unbearable" levels of road noise not experienced by their previous or subsequent brands such as Good Year and Michelin, but as you and the other guys point out, until you actually test them on your own vehicle, you are relying on someone else's opinion. This was one of the reasons I posted on here, to get a real world, Skoda driver's viewpoint of which tyres and wheels work well and offer a good compromise between grip, wear and road noise. Honestly, the noise from these tyres is truly awful, by far the worst I have experienced in any vehicle I have owned in 33 years of motoring, as it is described in the reviews, if you are in the car for any distance / time, it is bordering on unbearable.

Reducing wheel size?
So, I went to the Skoda dealership over the weekend, and they were very helpful and accommodating, the parts desk guy was happy to give me a print out of the spec of my car, and also the original wheels fitted to the car, which turned out to not be the ones currently fitted, but another of the same size but different design . . . . . curious! He also had a look on ETKA and whilst he was able to find that there were 17" options for the Superb, he would confirm that they would fit my car, as he kept referring back to the ET figure being different, and that my specific car was intended to run on 18" wheels with the ET 46 offset . . . . I also spoke to a couple of tyre fitters and was able to establish that each tyre has a dB rating between 69 and 73 and that there are options for lower dB tyres in both 17" and 18" options. Much to ponder before I shell out my hard earned moola, I want to make sure that I am doing it to make an improvement, not just to "try it out" so to speak. Thanks to you all for your input, advice, guidance and providing me with gold standard information and links - you're all very kind.
