  1. M1 doesn't go within 50 miles of Birmingham. As for what lies north of Birmingham, it's hard to say. Only a handful of intrepid explorers, no doubt inspired by books written by those brave explorers Thesiger, Newby and Burton, have travelled that far and unfortunately they never returned. So be warned. Stay in the comfort and luxury of your southern home, and don't be tempted by the great unknown. There are rumours of three-headed monsters with the strength of ten men and the capacity to drink 10 pints of Guinness every day, living in encampments which are twinned with villages in the Amazonian rain forests, speaking a dialect which is other-worldly, (and that is just the women) is only the beginning. Things get much worse when you approach Scotland.
  2. You can get plates made up using motorcycle-sized letters which are slightly smaller than normal by number plate specialists: Custom Show Plates, Customised Number Plates: Personalised Car Registration Plates provided you sign to say that they are for show purposes only. Top company to deal with. Reliable and good value. Go to their web site for more info. and prices and pics. Buy them. Fit them. Use them on the road. I can guarantee that you will be stopped, questioned and reported by every police traffic car that spots you. Your decision.
  3. I've measured it and there is! The garage which is constructing and fitting the device which will extend the seat adjustment 6" further back has told me that the recliner and seat height adjusters will remain usable. I am sure this will do the trick, but if it doesn't it will mean chopping the Fabia in for a different car, and I don't want to do that as I am happy with it (apart from the seat.)
  4. If I adjust the seat up as high as it will go I have zero headroom, and the car is un-driveable in this state. I am sure that raising the seat height will solve the problem of the front of the seat being too high, but that is small consolation if it introduces other problems. I must stress that I have never had a problem in any other vehicle I have ever driven, ( and I have vast experience of many other vehicles ) - this is a first. For me, Mercedes tops the list of comfortable cars over long distances and I am sure this is because of the hard seats they fit as standard and, more importantly, lengthy seat adjustment available in all their models.
  5. Thanks to all who replied to my original post, but I am amazed at some of the suggestions. Is it really possible that some people think I hadn't thought of altering the seat position, or the height adjustment or the steering wheel rake? There is no doubt as to the cause, which some posters correctly identified as being the front of the seat is too high due to the anti-submarining design and is stopping blood flow. Moving the seat forward to counter-act this doesn't work as it then brings me too close to the pedals and dashboard, and my head is too close to the roof. So this afternoon I went to a local Motability conversion garage who were very conversant with the problem. Their solution is to construct an extension to the seat runners which will give me an extra 6" of rearward movement of the seat. Job done. By the way, I have no posture problems, have no desire to swallow medication before a 2 hour drive, and have nowhere to store the driver's seat if I remove it and sit in the back!
  6. Can anyone help with with this? After driving for about 2 hours I get bad cramp in my legs because the seat is too close to the pedals even when it's adjusted to it's rear-most position. I've never had this problem before in any other car/truck I have driven. The car is a 2006 Fabia, and for the record I am 6' tall. Has anyone got any experience of this problem? If so, what did you do about it? No-one sits behind me, so rear legroom is not an issue. Any sensible suggestions are more than welcome as it's driving me nuts! Thanks.
  7. Is it easy ? Nope. Is it worth it ? Definitely. I had 6.5" Rockford Audiophile mids fitted into the doors and tweeters fitted into the standard location on my Fabia. I'm really happy with the sound quality. Do it, you won't regret it !
  8. Here. Click on this link. www.caraudiodirect.com Then click on "Accessories" in the drop-down menu on the left. If the link doesn't work, just copy and paste into your browser............
  9. If you go to www.CarAudioSecurity.com they have a Sony head unit on offer right now which will play Cds / MP3 / Tuner. It costs £39 with a 6 month warranty. (The cost of 3 cds). It will sound far better than your Goodmans ever did, and you need never listen to a cassette ever again .......
  10. When i play cd's on shuffle play it only picks from the disk selected. On my Alpine it only picks from the disc selected if I use 'Shuffle'. It picks from all discs if I select 'Random'. Perhaps yours is the same?
  11. Just had a quote for a 20k service on a 2006 Fabia from Alex Lawrie Main Dealers in Liverpool: £203 Don't you get an estimated cost before asking your dealer to work on your car? And £203 sounds a lot to me for what is little more than an engine oil & filter change and a new pollen filter.
  12. Here's a suggestion: go to Confused.com and type in your details once. They do all the searching for you and the results are presented in an easy to compare style. There is a company called Performance Direct which are currently offering really low quotes but with a high excess of around £600 as opposed to the average of about £250 / £300. Could be worth it, but it's a gamble!
  13. You seem to have mastered the art of intelligent debate! Anyway, I will excuse you as English appears to be your second language. What a pity you don't have a first.
  14. I don't mean to sound pedantic, but thanks to our European leaders in Brussels, car manufacturers are no longer able to stipulate that your warranty is invalidated unless you use their own dealers. Tried and tested in a court of law! Hoo-ray!
  15. Hi, no warning light but if you've only recently got the Furby there is a number of other little foibles you may not know about............ If you have your front screen wipers on and select reverse, the rear wiper gives a single sweep automatically. When parked with the ignition off, if you operate your turn signal then the front and rear sidelights on either left or right side, will come on as parking lights. Hope this helps!
  16. This is the most amazing deal for a tuner/CD/ MP3 player I have seen in a long while. £70 rrp reduced to £39. Brand new from a recommended dealer. For some reason I can't get the link to work, so go to Caraudiodirect.com and find The Mutant head unit under "special offers". ps If anyone could explain how to post a link on this board to a website I would appreciate it!
  17. Love the install mate, but don't come anywhere near Liverpool or Manchester with those tinted side windows! nick, nick!
  18. I wouldn't like to comment on something that I haven't heard, but I would seriously doubt if that mini-sub would do the job. I notice in the reviews of it that one guy likes it so much he's going to buy another one when he saves up! Read between the lines on that one! I have 6.5" Rockford Audiophile speakers in the front of mine, which put out much more mid-bass than the standard speakers. In the interest of sound quality and an acceptable sound stage, the rear speakers are disconnected. To get a big improvement in the sound of the new front speakers you will really need to fit a new amp anyway, so if you bought a 4 channel and used 2 ch. for the fronts and the other 2 channels bridged to mono for the bass, you are halfway there! An 8" sub in a small enclosure in the boot would guarantee an improvement over what you have now, whereas buying that mini-sub from the US would be a gamble. Why don't you upgrade your front speakers before making a decision on improving the bass? And don't be fooled into thinking that a 10" sub and amp. in the boot is only for boy-racers.............. it's primarily there to give just the kind of bass that you are looking for! Good luck whatever you decide to do...
  19. And what you save in fuel will go towards the cost of a new clutch.
  20. I'm not too sure about the bus but I totally agree with you about the train. I used to use the car/rail/sleeper service from Calais to the south of France regularly and I would load the car onto the train at Calais, sleep overnight in a berth, and wake up the next morning 700 km. further south. And the best bit is that I used no fuel at all. None.
  21. I don't use a standard radio / cassette player in my car so I don't know the "large round button on the right" to which you are referring. Try storing the stations manually again as explained above then when you have finished, check if you have a button marked "SCN" and if you have, press it ONCE. If it still doesn't work, have you considered upgrading to a more up-to-date head unit? Alpine, Panasonic and Pioneer are the favoured units and the basic models are very inexpensive.
