LL, you're probably right that 180bhp is enough for most people but that's missing the point when it comes to the world of modified motor vehicles. Some people don't have a car solely for the purpose of getting from A - B and like to make their cars a bit more individual.

The beauty with the vRS is that as an all round package it is excellent in standard form but it can be made better for a relativevely small outlay. If you look at it from this perspective it would almost be rude not to. ;)

I suggest that you buy a few of the more respected tuning mag's like Performance VW (not max power) and have a look at what people like to do to their cars. I can never understand why the likes of VAG don't capitalise on the tuning market. Don't forget that not all people buy a car and that's the end of the financial comittment (HP payments aside). Many people spend literally thousands personalising their vehicle to make it go faster, look better or whatever they're into....

    Nuff said.

Jason, No afraid not. Actually don't know diddley squat about astromony just got the above on e-mail but thought it sounded quite interesting. I must admit I was wondering why all the rush sending probes to the big red planet.

  3. Read and digest - will be asking questions afterwards.

Never again in your (or my) lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular.

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75 - power magnification, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history.

So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this! No one alive today will ever see this again.

  4. Geoff, I meant for nicking vRS Skoda's but good point all the same. I can't help thinking that the police helicopters could be put to better use. I mean those squirrel (I think) choppers are ok upto a point with their IR video etc but how's about shipping in a few of them Apache gunships.

Just make it part of standard operating procedure for plod to direct the stolen car down a nice quiet country lane or some large grassy area and then let fly with 56mm rockets and chain gun. Would give a whole new meaning to the term 'target' vehicle....

  5. Okay Gentlemen - prepare to start your engines.... Brum Brum.

Geoff / Mark - will see you at Wolviston services just after 13:00.

If anyone else is in the area be sure to pop down to St Mary's lighthouse car park, Whitley Bay this sunday afternoon at 2pm....

    Cheers

Denis, Apparently some 2002 and later Audis require "Dual K Lines" to communicate with all onboard controllers. Hence a newer version is required with this functionality. The version 2 as supplied by OBD Tool is the one to go for in this case.

This is even cheaper if you want to make your own pcb:

Bang goes that idea then. Can't be bothered if it's that complicated. Now to find somewhere that will sell me one cheaply....

Hey here's an idea. Buy the one from Halfords and chop the end off it. With a big hammer maybe...

Q, Dunno really just that on a previous thread Jon mentioned that you can knock one up from scratch. I assume that all you need to do is get a standard serial cable and buy the right plug to connect to the OBD2 port. Then solder the correct wires to the pins (hence the need for a wiring diagram) then this should enable you to run ok with the freeware VAG-COM s/ware.

Or am I missing the point totally....

  9. Jon, like the idea of using the shareware version of VAG-COM as a diagnostic facility. I've just downloaded but any advice on where to look for a suitable serial cable - bearing in mind I'm a bit of a techno numpty... Thanks. [/b]

Anyone got any ideas where I can get hold of a 'cheap' serial cable? I've just spent the last few hours trawling the web but all involve shelling out loads of cash to get the full package which is not what I'm after.

Also had a look for a wiring diagram to throw one together myself - well with a bit of help from a friendly IT chappie but these seem to be a closely guarded secret... Mmmm anyone prepared to shed any light.

  10. Went for a wee stroll around Halfords yesterday looking for some odds 'n' sods. Happened across a VW / Audi diagnostics tool that connects via the OBDII port and runs a full check. Any fault codes are displayed which you can look up in the enclosed instructions to find out what they refer to.

Admittedly it's a world apart from VAG-COM as it's only a read only device but at only

  11. We've got our North East meet on Sunday so I won't be able to go - sounds like there's some trick motas goin' tho' - I just learnt those words from a mates 11 year old whilst having a look round some very nice VW's at the GTI meet at Elvington yesterday....
