  1. There are gaps between the coils (little ones) but the angle and the flash make it look like there aren't.
  2. More updates: Once I had destroyed my locking wheel nuts getting them off I jacked the car up at the back, I used the boot jack and just lowered it onto a couple of spare wheels with wood on them. Removed the rear shocks from the car, three bolts, piece of urine. Then the drama, couldn't find a 16mm offset ring spanner. Got one in the end. To get the mount and bump stop off the old strut you need a 16mm offset ring and a 5mm spanner, I just used an adj. To put the Weitec unit on I needed a 17mm spanner, much more common size, clever Weitec. Here's a couple of pics of the new stuff in place from under the car. If you have read the above you will know that there has been a flamingo up with the fronts (like a **** up but much bigger). So no pics of the front yet but I'll get on it. Before that here is a pic showing the comparison in height between the standard (front) suspension and the Weitec Hicon GT on about half of the potential lowering (back). Front: Rear: It got dark as I was finishing so here is one of the whole car in the dark: And finally, just for laughs, I started doing the fronts at work. Home of the 33 tonne lift, 70 tonne elevated underbody washdown ramp and... Ten tonne trolley jack: Massive eh? I had to lift the car up with the boot jack just to get the trolley jack under it. There are two, I can get the front 3½ feet off the ground with them.
  3. I second that. I have the upper and lower strut braces, Whiteline RARB, R32 FARB, S3 steering rack and half a set of bloody coilovers. My friend who has a standard vRS jumped in and wanted to know how much extra power it had. None. It just felt like it had more...
  4. You know what I meant. When you have minimum steering angle on i.e. on the motorway, there is no more tram lining, bump steering or any other twitchiness and bad behaviour. As your steering angle increases the feedback from the wheel becomes improves. Don't mock us people who can't detect sarcasm. It's not fair.
  5. Actually the cup holder I use most in the car is called Carol and makes an annoying buzzing noise during hard cornering.
  6. The best one I have ever used was built into an ozzy made car fridge, it chilled the cans while it held them. Bonza. The one in the Lotus Elise was pretty good. Octavia, awful.
  7. Brilliant. I am not going to get the triplex antenna, I am going to remove the existing radio aerial for looks anyway. This aerial will be OK right? SMB - GPS ANTENNA AGB-002-149 Seat Skoda Aerial on eBay (end time 28-Jun-09 16:03:59 BST) I have bought a second hand maxidot dash pod from a classified on here. I will get the 3B0 919 894A TMC box and buy a wire and I'm away...
  8. I have the same problems you have. My Nav is a retro fit, I have no GPS aerial at all, not even one in the dash. Every now and then I have to manually punch in my location and it will inertially track the car. I also believe it uses the input from the rear ABS sensors to track the car. I am going to get an aftermarket aerial for it. I don't have the instructions and it pulled up two faults on my VAG COM scan. One for incorrect coding of stereo, sorted that, and one for no TMC signal, I just told the computer that I don't have TMC, I'll see if that sorts it. On that subject, can someone recommend me an aerial for the GPS and tell me what I need to sort out the TMC signal problem?
  9. Not sure, I know some racks have an eccentric pinion to give that effect. I think this is a by-product of the way the steering geometry changes as more lock is put on. Alternatively it could be that dead ahead there is no more feedback from the wheels than the standard rack but as you put on the lock the steering weights up more quickly than the standard rack. I am really enjoying it now as a get used to it. I find that for a lot of corners I don't brake now, just dab them to weight up the front wheels and slice through the curve. Definitely more fun.
  10. I used mine once, went round a corner, lost the drink under the seat. Never used it since. The one for the back seats is even less use.
  11. No mate, I only ever did ME1 ME2 and ME3. Mostly ME3. I'm not sure Mike does tyres, If he doesn't, everyone else in the world does them. Next week when? I am dropping my car off for gearbox apocalypse on the 20th. Also, more bad news. 1st. Sorting the centre section of the exhaust has caused the whole exhaust to resonate, I did a temporary fix by changing the idle speed in VAG COM but I'll have to get it on the ramps at work on Monday and hit it with a hammer or something. 2nd. I couldn't do my suspension today because... I've lost the key to my locking wheel nuts. Brilliant. Now I have nearly £500 worth of ballast in the boot, I was all worked up about fitting them too. AAAAAARGH! So, I got a tool to take off the locking wheel nuts and it was rubbish and has gouged a big chunk out of the paint on one of the wheels. Then I went to do the rear suspension and had to look around for hours to find an offset 16mm ring spanner, there is no 16mm, offset or not, in my set of spanners. Then, today, I started on the fronts, to get the old struts off you need a 7mm allen key. I didn't bring a 7mm allen key to work so I spent three hours walking around a giant army base trying to find one. Got one, undid the nut on the top of the left strut. Undid the nut ont he top of the right strut. Oh no, that's right. I stripped the allen bolt on the top of the right strut because whoever did it up last was Mohammed I'm hard Bruce Lee. Now I will have to drill a hole in the ram and block it that way to get the bugger off.
  12. All I have done all week is try to sort out the rattles. I have just done all poly bushes including the dog bone and now the car is rattling to death. Plastic trim on the boot lid. Wheel arch liners. Sheet of wood supporting the carpet over the spare wheel. Heat shield under the cat. Exhaust centre section. ("fixed" that with jubilee clips, now it's worse, the whole exhaust is resonating at idle. Changed the idle speed with VAG COM and it's a bit better.) Glove box. Ash tray. (turned out to be my tyre pressure gauge in there). The only problem is that all those noises and the soft dog bone bush were masking the sound of a knackered diff that I can now hear. Ouch. *Gmaster* check your rear load bay carpet, the wooden backing can be noisy, I thought it was the parcel shelf at first too.
  13. It's going, not gone yet. You get a bit of transmission backlash, i.e. with the engine and wheels stopped there is some slop in the transmission, and when the wheels send feedback into the trans you get a "clack" noise from the gearbox. It is most noticeable on no power decelerating and hitting bumps or when coming on and off the brakes or when going from forward to reverse when manoeuvring.
  14. More good news/bad news. I have had an annoying rattle from under the car since the dog bone went in. I couldn't work it out. I checked on the forum and there was a list of things it could be: Plastic side under tray bits flapping, it was that, I took them off. Inner boot lid trim, it was that too, I took that off. Radiator mounts, it was that too so I temporarily sorted that out. Exhaust centre section mount, It was that too so I sorted that too. In addition to all that is was also the heat shield on the cat, it had rotted through two of the bolts and was clanging. Took that off too. Now the noise is almost gone, more on that soon. I collected my shocks etc, from Mike and I will fit them tomorrow. Now the bad news. Once I sorted all the other noises out Mike and Des spotted a new one. Transmission backlash, yes! My diff is on the way out, woop! So, ► Cold air intake ► Dump valve ► Denso Spark plugs and ► Saikou Michi oil catch tank are off the shopping list, I have had to move things forward. I am now going to be getting a Quaife diff (I might as well) and since the gearbox is off I might as well do the G60 flywheel and Sachs clutch. Since it was on the same month's budget as the diff fitting I am going to get a B&M Short shifter. The only problem is that that is nearly three month's worth of car budget gone in one month. My wife has given me the OK to use money from the savings as long as I replace it. POW! I am going to be in the odd situation of having all my transmission and handling upgrades completed with no power increase at all.
  15. I used to use that but it clogged up my pump and nozzles.
  16. 1, Jaymd 2, Matt@theforce 3, vRS_Si 4, Bowders1 5, amateurstuntman Put me down, this exact OCC is on my shopping list. 2nd edit: Damn you Briskoda, you don't have the vb code for strikethrough enabled...
  17. Come on guys! What happened with this? I want my bonnet.
  18. I like it but just not as much as a car with a standard but body coloured grille, I think it needs the badge as a focal point. To that end I wouldn't body colour the lower grilles (if that's what you meant) since it would remove all the depth from the car. Unless you mean get the milotec lower grilles, then they look OK.
  19. Just to check: You aren't going to drive it around for too long with one new spring on it are you? My car's handling is off because I am doing just that...
  20. Well, if you also have a problem with the pads not springing back very quickly then the brakes could do that after heavy braking. To be honest though that is just a guess.
  21. Speed related chuffing? CV joint? Warped brake disc?
  22. Mine doesn't have one. Mike at IP says he can't remember working on a car that still had one...
  23. Went out to the car and tried my new Vag Com cable out (I couldn't do it until now since I had left the laptop at work). Drama. 17978, Engine start blocked by immobiliser, intermittant. That's OK, I know about that. I did that while I was checking my new keys. 00792, A/C pressure switch (F129). No idea, I'll look into it. 00532, Airbag supply voltage B+ too low, intermittant. No idea, sounds scary. 00481, Navigation control module for traffic radio, no communications. and 01044, Radio control module incorrectly coded. Those are probably related, previous owner installed new Nav, probably badly, when I got it the unit stuck 10mm out of the front of the dash. Now I've got all that lot to sort out...
  24. Will be, I've prioritised the list we worked up on Friday and it will take about a year to get it all done (providing I don't get the wife pregnant). I've been reading up on things and there doesn't seem to be a lot of love for the K04 but going down that route means the bits that fail are cheaper even if the bits that don't are still pricey. Anyway, when people recommend other turbos they always say "with the K04 you get to a dead end". Perhaps the dead end I'll get to is fine, I'm stuck with my wife but you won't hear me complain about that... Sometimes enough is enough. My worries at the moment surround the Tig Art manifold, yours blew up, I don't need exploding manifolds (interesting plural manifolds since manifold means multiple or many) in my life, the primary designs one is a billion pounds though, I suppose you get what you pay for. Jigger, I'll do more pictures when I put the coilovers on, possible this weekend, depends if Mike gets them in this week. Then there will be a bit of a lull in the procedings until September when I will get: ► Cold air intake ► Dump valve ► Denso Spark plugs ► Saikou Michi oil catch tank and possibly an uprated fuel pump, I'll have to get it some time and I might not fit it right away.
