  1. In my experience, traffic cops are pretty fair. If they stop you then you're bang to rights. I've been cut loads of slack by them in the past.

If you've been warned about something and basically appear to have ignored what you have been told then they're not going to be overly impressed.

  2. I had the same problem the other morning on my 2001 TDi. Switching off and restarting the engine cleared it, and I've not had it again since.

I just put it down to the temperature at the time (I think it was about -1) but if it occurs again I'll check it out.

  3. I was aware of Skoda already but my interest was really caught when I saw a review of the Octy RS a while back.

I had a '96 Escort Ghia X up until January but it was on the way out - the plan was to try and keep it going for another year or so and then buy a 3 year old Octy vRS, by which time I'd be over 25 and my points would have cleared, but in the end it just had to go.

At the moment a vRS is out of the question - just too expensive to run as I do over average mileage and IIRC it's group 16. Well anyway, back in '97 I was driving an A4 1.9 TDI, and that was ace, so I thought if I can't have a vRS just now why not look at getting a diesel instead? It had to be the 110bhp variant though, and it took a bit of finding - it seems that second hand 3 or 4 year old Elegance TDI's are a bit thin on the ground. I found one in Sheffield though at a Skoda main dealer, went for a test drive and the rest is history.

I found Briskoda.net doing a search on something like 'Octavia engine cover' I think it was.

  4. Cheers guys, I had the grille off yesterday to get a look :)

After I'd got them off I was still thinking about getting the whole door trim off so I could run the cable for the tweeters back into the car and mount them in the trim on the A-pillar, but I've decided against cutting big holes in the trim just yet and opted for an Alpine custom fit co-axial instead of the component set, so that should make life a bit easier.

I've gone for the SXE-1725S (I think that's the code off the top of my head), which I think is the same depth as the original speakers and should fit behind the grilles.

They're coming into the shop on Wednesday so I'll let you know how it goes.

  5. Hi guys

I was having a look earlier today at taking the trim off the front doors to get at the speakers, with a view to sizing up them up for replacement.

After taking the torx-type screws out from round the edges and finding the philips one just behind the electric windows switch, the door still seemed to be pretty well held on somewhere in the middle - I assume there's another screw somewhere in the area of the handle - and I couldn't lift it to free it around the window opening.

Can anyone advise me on what else I need to do to get the door trim off?

Also does anyone know off hand what size the speakers are in the fronr, and if there are any particular issues with the space available for fitting replacements? I was looking at using something out of the Alpine range out of preference.

    Many thanks in advance!

  6. I've had a bit more time to play with mine now and there's one or two things that bug me about the 9831, stuff that my old Alpine HU did but the new one doesn't - I'm not sure if the same would be true for the 9830 but it may be worth checking out.

    1. The character set for the CD titling does not include numbers - WTF?! Hopefully if I title discs in the changer it will use a more complete set but I've not tried it yet, not being able to use numbers at all would be really irritating, especially when you're restricted to just 8 characters anyway.

    2. Unable to select a CD to play from the changer by scanning through the CD titles, which was really useful.

Apart from those, which I guess I can live with, I'm still well happy with it!

    :)

  7. I've just got one off Ebay - but unfortunately american spec - so no-one wants to fit it for me... no ISO connectors.

    Doh

Think I'm gonna send it back and get one from UK somewhere. Very good unit though...

TBH I reckon it'd be a fairly simple (if not tedious) job to mate the HU wiring with the car-end of a harness adapter.

It'd save messing about sending it back to the states, but then it's not as easily transferable to another motor.

  8. Well, I fitted the HU last night, so that's one more job out the way. There's not a lot of room behind that dashboard for the extra cabling! It was well worth taking the glovebox out to get better access, and even then I'm glad I've not got big hands.

There is definitely a wire on the main loom that connects to the same pin as the illumination wire on the harness adapter, but maybe it serves another purpose if you think there isn't one for illumination. Normally I'd check the wiring diagrams in a Haynes manual to be sure, but they don't do one for the Octavia yet.

I didn't connect it upin any case, just set the function to manual. To be honest, even in daylight the HU is bright enough to be seen well enough even whilst dimmed, so I reckon I'll just leave it as is.

Next job is fitting the changer in the boot in place of the standard one, when I get chance.

  9. I'm just looking through the manual for my new Alpine HU before I go and install it and in the section about the Dimmer function (to dim the stereo display using the car's illumination circuit) it states:

"If your vehicle should have a dimmer control for the dashboard lights, never connect the DIMMER cable of the radio to this dimmer control."

As this is not mentioned specifically in the Installation section of the manual, I'm not quite sure what it means, and as my Octavia has got the dimmer dial for the dash lights I want to make sure I get it right.

Does it mean I shouldn't connect the stereo to the car's illumination circuit at all, or that I shouldn't try and connect it to actual dimmer control dial (which I wouldn't have tried to do anyway :s)?

  10. I just bought my Octavia 110bhp TDi the other week and I've fitted a Dragon tuning box. As per previous posts it did fit without having to make any changes to the loom but it didn't clip back into place so it's just cable-tied to the original mounting.

The original factory setting saw an immediate increase in performance, but the traction control seemed to be kicking in a bit too often even in pretty good driving conditions and I had the glow plug light flashing once or twice when the engine was cold so I've turned it down about 1/4 turn for the time being. I'm still in the tweaking stage really so I'll give it a couple of days and see what happens, if I don't see the glow plug light again I might turn it back up 1/8 turn or so, see how that goes.

I'm really happy with mine so far!

  11. Cheers, that's one of the things I was going to be asking about in time! There's not a huge rush, I can make do with the single slot on the new HU.

I've had my old Alpine HU so long it's got a tape slot instead, otherwise I would have fitted by now.

  12. Alright guys.

An Alpine CDA-9831R is on it's way, I'll probably be putting in my old Alpine 12-Disc too when I get chance ;)

Already fitted the Dragon Performance tuning box too, I'm just tweaking the setting now.
