A contender for one of the best cars I've owned.  I got it new in 1990 and drove it for 238,000 miles until I wrote it off in '98 in a low speed accident in traffic in Edinburgh.

I thrashed it pretty much everywhere including extended periods at 100 mph on French Autoroutes and around Circuit de Charade at Clermont Ferrand with wife, kids and tyres squealing.

I took it off road, towed half a dozen grass surfers around a large field perched on a big sheet of plywood, towed an overly large caravan up and down Lake District passes, taught my 8 year old son to drive in it.  I could go on...

In its lifetime it consumed three radiators, two sets of suspension spheres, a few sets of discs and pads and several tyres.  I fitted the Peugeot 205 GTi alloys largely to get more air to the brakes after setting fire to them coming down Puy de Dôme.

When it was written off it was still on its original turbo and had had no engine work other than oil and filter changes.

Diesel and petrol at low levels reported.......

Fuel supplies drop by half as travellers head off on Easter breaks

    Press Association News
TED HENNESSEY AND IAN JONES, PA  14 April 2022, 3:48 pm

Supplies of petrol and diesel at filling stations in some areas of the country are running at around half their usual level as the UK’s travel network came under pressure ahead of the Easter getaway, new figures suggest.    Petrol stock levels at garages in eastern England averaged 19% as of April 10, with south-east England recording 21% and London 22%, a drop from the pre-pandemic average of 40%.  Diesel stocks have also dropped in recent days, averaging 23% at filling stations in eastern England as of April 10, compared with a pre-pandemic level of 48%.   In London, diesel stock levels have dropped to 24%, down from 46% pre-pandemic, while in south-east England they have fallen to 26%, down from 47%.  The average price of a litre of unleaded petrol stood at 161.8p as of April 11, slightly below the recent record of 165.4p, while diesel was 176.2p, below the recent record of 177.5p.

Got some diesel this morning but used 225 miles of it so only have 400 miles left.   Never mind EV range anxiety when I have 24 hours electricity at home but filling up worries now.  Must keep the fuel tank half or even two thirds full I reckon.

For years, I have run my tank down to almost red. Not anymore. Think about filling up around half a tank now. Mainly due to cost and now availability. When the original fuel shortage happened last September, I was done almost red prior to my week of night shifts and the car in front of me, the pump clicked when the driver had put about £15 in!

  3. I managed to get 35k out of my original Continental Eco Contact 5s by having them swapped around. I now have Eco Contact 6s on the front having done nearly 25k. I did have them on the rear but a bulge was found on the OSR caused by potholes at the last MOT. Now got Nexens on the rear which were reluctantly fitted duing MOT. However they seem decent tyres.

Didn`t release that Conti`s had less tread when new.

  4. The dual mass flywheel is between the flywheel and clutch and unless you’ve noticed a change in the quality of your gear changes, I would suggest that isn’t a dmf issue. I had a dmf go on an Octavia 2 and it was like a slipping clutch

     and went within 2-3 days....

But I’m no mechanic. I’d get a second opinion. Call me cynical, but a dmf change is a more expensive job.....

Exactly my logic for replacing the cambelt on my previous EA211 1.4TSI after 5 years.

Had my cambelt and water pump replaced after 5 years and 56k in September. Requested to see the original belt and have to say it looked in extremely good condition. Do I regret having the belt replaced? No, for the peace of mind and hoping to keep the car long term, having owned for nearly 5 years.

  6. Had my 1.6TDi for 56k miles and nearly 5 years. Apart from the noise that has already been mentioned and a desire for a 6th gear there is little to fault really. The car feels solid and ideal for trips way with the huge boot. I like the climate control especially. Only part that been replaced, apart from consumables is a fuel pressure sensor that failed at about 36K when car went into limp mode.

Over the past 18 months I have had Scala, Kamiq and Octavia IV courtesy cars and none have inspired me enough to consider trading in my Octavia.

  7. Was given a Octavia SEL MkIV diesel as a courtesy car yesterday as my Mk3 was due a service. I thought I’m going to use this opportunity as an extended test drive.

Well there is no denying the driving experience was enjoyable. Nice to have a six speed box and once I figured out the electric seat I was comfortable and cruised sublimely at 70.

But. I couldn’t figure how to use the touch screen without the radio on, the sat nav was in kilometres and couldn’t figure how to turn it off the previous destination. And the heating was saying that warming my feet wasn’t available!

And the tailgate gate seemed to rattle over bumps.

I didnt regret giving it back and so on for another 10000 miles of MkIII motoring.
