  1. I've gone the whole hog now. Rang BT to get reconnected and have setup an account with Sky talk. Once the BT line is active i'll get Sky BB in and the ntl BB service out. Sky haven't upgraded my exchange yet so I can't get the 16Mbps with unlimited downloads MAX offer for £10 yet so I will have to go for the 'Connect' package for £17.99 (up to 8Mbps with 40Gb download limit) in the meantime.

I've complained to Sky about that so they have given me 3 months 1/2 price on my Sky tv and they will review it in October by which time my exchange should be upgraded.

With BT option 1 and Sky Talk, my phone service is slightly cheaper but my local and national calls are totally free as opposed to just being free off peak with NTL.

I'll initially be saving £7 a month on my BB and getting up to 4x the speed. Once my exchange is upgraded the potential speed will double but so will ntls so i'll still be getting 4x the speed but i'll only be paying Sky £10/m for BB so the savings go up to £15/m.

Taking all of this into account, the calls I currently get charged for and allowing for a crossover period on the BB services of 1 month, I stand to save around £257 during the next year.

Maybe this whole episode with NTL was a blessing in disguise.

  2. Had some serious words with NTL earlier. As usual they said they had a server down and couldnt run a test on my cable connection but promised to run the test this evening and let me know of any problems.

No return call of course so in a last ditch attempt i reset the router to factory settings again and then powered up everything a bit at a time (including the cheapo Belkin router from Ebay). Guess what? It worked!

What a nightmare. If NTL did something to resolve this i'd love to know what. Switching back to BT tomorrow anyway. Once i'm up and running NTL will be dropped for Sky Broadband.

    Cheers everyone for your help

  3. If they can get to a larger local library' date=' they often offer free internet access in time slots, i.e. either reserve the machine in advance or just turn up and can use if no-one else is on it.

My thinking is that a newcomer might clock up quite a few hours (eek if paying by the minute) both because of the novelty value and getting to grips with it, plus it might be better if the initial time was free (and with library staff available to bail them out if they fall at every hurdle).

Cheers, sounds like good advice but theres no hope of my mother going to a library. lol. so i have signed her up with orange and hope to get it running for her tomorrow.

  4. The NTL modem only gives out one IP address - if you switch it from your PC to the router it won't hand the router an IP = no internet access.

Turn off the modem' date=' plug it over, turn it back on :)[/quote']

Cheers I know all that but it still hasn't solved the problem. The router is seeing the WAN when connected to the cable modem and it is also see the machines on the local area network but the cable modem simply won't talk to my router (either of them). What could NTL be playing at. I mean bear in mind that this problem literally happened over night and I had made no recent changes to the router setup or my pc's/laptop.

Contacting BT to today to arrange reconnection so I can switch to Sky Broadband. In the mean time this is really ****ing off SWMBO.

  5. Not sure what mine is set at but I drove the mother in laws Megane at the weekend and the steering weight was a dream in comparison with mine. It was nice and light but not over assisted. I'll be getting the dealer to lighten mine up a bit at the next service I think.

  6. I've got Xenon lights on mine' date=' and the manual says you get a 5.5 litre screenwash tank with Xenons, so didn't know if this had something to do with it...

Does anyone know for sure if it's supposed to have one?[/quote']

IIRC there's only 2 sizes of tank with the 5.5 litre version being the larger. It's installed on all cars with headlight washers, not just cars with xenons fitted.

My tank doesn't have the filter either.

  7. my daylight running lights are off - but this hasnt effected my light assist....... lights auto come on in the dark on entry and exit of the car at night, and also fitted with auto lights which also come on when traveling over 100 mph - for (safe) :) brisk over takes.

Its when the daytime running lights are turned 'on' that it renders some of light assists functionality useless. If daytime running lights are 'off' then light assist can work to its full potential.

The auto headlights come on at night (obviously), when travelling at 90mph for 5 mins or more IIRC or when auto wipers are running full tilt.

  8. I dont think you can go wrong with freeserve/wanadoo/orange or whatever it is they call themseleves these days. Free dialup (except call charges) access on 0845 number paying per minute you are connected with no contract.

    cheers for that mannyo

  9. Same problem has been raised on here before. It's not a common problem but a known one so just book it into the dealer. These head units are not repairable by your dealer as far as I know so they will probably just replace the whole thing which may take a while to order in. You may need to push them to refund the cost of your new CD though.

  10. When was the car manufactured? If it was before week 22 then chances are it wont play mp3s

Are you trying it in the changer or head unit? I dont think the changer recognises mp3's.

Are you using a re-writable cd? Not sure it will work.

What format is the disc you have the mp3's on? Any mp3 compatible head unit i have used only recognises mp3's written to a disc as data but that may differ with the stream. I know that Nero for example can write an mp3 audio disc. Maybe you need to try that.

In any case i'm sure someone with an audience HU can help as the disc format will be the same.

  11. Tunnel mode will shut down the headlights when driving daytime.

So that is the part of light assist. When you order that part' date=' it comes with the different lightswitch and menu items to maxidot to get home coming and leaving menus.[/quote']

Spagley said:- Bear in mind that if the lights are always on, then it means that some of 'lights assist' functionality is therefore disabled. (With the lights always on, they can't turn themselves on/off with dark/light can they!)

Malfean replied:- Actually light assist with tunnel light mode, does turn headlights off in daytime.

Johnnyc replied:- Isn't that what Spagley said?

Am i going mad here? Spagley was correct because with the daytime running lights option for Sweden etc, the headlights are always on when the engine is running and this means the tunnel light automatic headlights facility of light assist will not function. He said tunnel light turns on the lights in the dark and off during daylight periods which is also correct. My head hurts. Apologies if i missed something obvious.

  12. this was on another forum' date=' I have the sat nav but does anyone know how to do this???

    ******************************************************************

With SatNav and the "full size" MFD, you can.....

Change the auto lock / auto unlock doors.

Adjust the "brightness" of the footwell lighting.

turn on / off the remote opening/closing of windows and sunroof (if fitted) with the key.

Adjust the duration the headlights remain on in the leaving/coming home mode.

That's just a few things that l can think of.

    ****************************************************************

    John[/quote']

Not sure any of that is possible throught the Sat Nav on the OctyII but I could be wrong.

-Autolocking is an option you need to get the dealer to enable through VAG.Com

-There is no footwell lighting on the OctyII

-The remote opening/closing of windows etc from the remote is 'on' by default. Not sure why you would want to turn it 'off'

-You only get the coming home/leaving home functions if you specify 'light assist' in which case you can adjust the delay times through the maxidot computer.

  13. Yeah on mine even with the adjuster switch in the correct position they work but i think theres a fault with the drivers side mirror as it takes ages to demist. You do not have to turn on the heated rear window on for them to work though. They are automatic and turn on once the temperature falls below a certain point.

  14. Hi all' date='

Found this forum through the Dutch Skoda forum (http://www.skodaforum.nl). Read through many af the posts and it's quite interesting to learn new things about the car.

I've got a question about the Octavia DSG that I'm about to order. Asked the question on the Dutch forum as well, but did not get a good answer there. Maybe you can help?

What I'd like to know is whether it is possible to drive away with more revs than when running idle. Reason I ask is that I own a boat, and it's on a trailer. Trailer + boat weighs about 1300 kg, and when I'm on a steep slope to tow the boat out of the water, I need quite a bit of power. Starting with 900 RPM is not going to do it for me... With my current car (Alfa 147) I turn of ASR, bring the engine to about 2500 RPM, and with some controlled wheelspin I pull the trailer out of the water. This way I can use the full 275 nm torque, which would not be available with lower revs.

Is something like this also possible with DSG? Will the automated clutch slip until the car is strong enough (1750 RPM) and then pick up? Otherwise I'm afraid the engine will just stall, leaving my trailer in the water...

    Reactions greatly appreciated!

    Gys

Forget any type of Auto including DSG for what you need to do mate. A guy I know needed to pull his 45ft yacht on a trailer out of the boat yard onto the slipway. It's a heavy boat and using his BMW 740 with Auto box he just couldnt get traction. Same applied when some plonker tried in his Golf Mk V DSG only he couldn't get the revs up no matter how he tried. Eventually the DSG box just overheated and the display started flashing. A car with a standard manual box was required for the job and a few jaws dropped when an elderly boat owner hooked it up to his 1600 Lada and pulled the boat up onto the slipway first time.

  15. I've recently introduced a couple of my relatives to the world of computers and set them up with laptops. There's a very good chance that they'll end up with broadband but they want to have a go with email and internet access first before commiting to anything long term.

So, can anyone recommend a decent 'pay as you go' Dial up ISP?

    Cheers
